not sure if this would be the right forum, but has anyone else ever thought or done what im thinking about? i was looking at my brother norinco jw15 (12" barrel .22) and started thinking about aaffordable shooter. what if someone took either a JW15 or a savage/stevens shorty in ,.22 magnum rimfire and rebarelled it and change/modify the bolt in .22 hornet? then you would have a nice short barreled reloadable, cheap shooter.

how short barreled are you talking? You could always have them cut the barrel back to 18.5" if it keeps the OAL 26" or more.

for a really short barreled 22 Hornet, you could buy yourself a TC Encore/Contender platform and buy the Encore/Contender Pistol barrel in 22 Hornet and then you'd have one.

My brother has an Encore with a 15" 45/70 Pistol barrel...makes for a wicked bush gun!

Well:

1) The Hornet is centerfire, so it would be almost impossible to rework the rimfire bolt and firing pin to work properly.

2) The Hornet rim is 0.350" OD, which is unlikely to fit the mag at all and likely too big to ever fit on the bolt face, regardless of how you rework it.

3) The Hornet runs pressures that would blow apart the rimfire action, with only the bolt handle holding things closed.

If you want a short barreled .22 Hornet the best route would be to find a short action Savage and buy a pre-fit Shilen barrel in .22 Hornet. No guarantees it would feed properly, but it would be a purpose built centerfire action that is safe for the purpose.

Rebarrelling a Hornet rifle would be do-able. Converting and rebarrelling an inexpensive .22 would be asking for trouble, as well as being more expensive.
Want a short centerfire rifle? Get a Remington Model 700 or 7 in .222/.223. Retrofit a take-off .221 Fireball barrel from an XP-100; could be left as .221 or rechambered to .222 or .223.
