Anyone elses HP9 have trouble ejecting in the cold?

I bought my norc HP9 about a month ago, I've had it to the range numerous times and its been flawless until yesterday.

It was -15 out but also my day off. I threw on some layers and headed out to the range. The first box of 25 federal blue box target shells feed fine. As the gun got colder (I let it sit while I was playing with my sub 2000) I started to get a bunch of FTE's. The extractor was pulling fine out of the chamber but wouldn't dumb them out the ejection port. After pulling the bolt back I would have to manually remove the shell from the chamber.

I tired the same shells at home and it threw them a foot or two without a problem. My guess is the extractor plunger spring may have frozen up and it was unable to reach full range of motion? The only grease I cleaned off the shotgun before using was in the bore and the mag tube. I checked out the bolt and it didn't have any grease on it to clean off.

Anyone else experience the problem and have a fix?

Thanks for the wisdom are you a liberal? Maybe you should register at a less friendly and less helpful forum.

I posted here and not the gunsmithing forum because of the guys that hunt waterfowl in subfreezing temperatures may have experienced the same problem and fixed it.

When I say didn't clean, what I was referring too is deep cleaning the bolt. Everything has been wiped down numerous times and very lightly lubed.

LOL, I saw the flame coming a mile away.

It takes 5 mins to "deep clean" these things, do it and come back and let us know if it's still acting up.
 
Maybe too much lubrication? I keep my guns relatively free of lube in the winter, especially anything semi-auto. Spray with CLP and wipe off excess is all I do.

BTW, if you have less than 2 barrels, you're in the wrong forum. Safe queens only here. :D

One of my "safe Queens" shot over 10,000 rounds last year. And none of them were at Pumpkins. I don't own a Gun I don't shoot.
 
Degrease the bolt a bit better.

I've got 2 HP-9's, bought one new and one used, the new one did indeed come with lots of packing gunk on it and that's probably your problem.

That shotgun has a 26" Remington 870 barrel on it, and I use it for trap quite often. I find I can hit better with that cheap shotgun than I coudl with any of the 3 more expensive Browning shotguns I owned (sold both of the Browning O/U's but still have the semi) This was annoying, since I like to strut around and be snobby too, but I got over it.:p

What were your scores with the hp-9? Maybe we could have a virtual shoot off. And if you win you could "strut" all you want. Still have the Tu Tu?

I'm not a very dedicated trap shooter, I shoot about 1000 rounds a year, strictly for fun. HP-9 I was shooting 20-23 pretty consistently, less with the Brownings, although I would occasionally get a high score with all the shotguns. Doubt I could compete with a more dedicated trap shooter, regardless of what shotgun they or I were using.

I mention using this shotgun for trap only to remind people that if you want to have fun, you can get into it for cheap, you don't need to exclude yourself just because some snob doesn't approve of your gear. And if something works, it works. One of the best trap shooters in our club uses a really old, really beat up pump gun with no blueing left on it. No idea how old it is or how many rounds has been through it, but he consistently outshoots guys with expensive o/u shotguns. He also wears a beat up jean jacket alot. Thankfully, we dont' have many snobs in our club, as I am sure some would never recover from the anguish of getting beat by a carpenter in a jean jacket with an old pump gun. :)

Aww you give me too much credit. I thought seeing the hp-9 was the greatest thing since sliced bread a little competion might be in order.

It's a functional inexpensive pump shotgun, no more, no less. Sliced bread is overrated if you own a good knife.

To truly rate the "shootability" a person would need a side by side comparison. Lend me one of your shotguns and I'll shoot 5 rounds of trap with it, 5 rounds with the HP-9 and I'll get our clubs #1 trap shooter (who incidentally put aside his O/U for a semi as he hits better with it, although sometimes he picks the O/U back up) to shoot 5 rounds with each, too. Then we can compare in an apples to apples situation, removing the shooters ability from the equation as much as possible.

I would say ok to that but my Dermatologist would be a big no. I get a violent rash from chu wood.
 
Mine's been good so far.

Like the others said, give it a good cleaning and maybe clean the bore near the chamber really well in case there's some gunk/plastic nuked on.

This thread reminds me of motorcycles. ??

30 years ago whenever 2 motorcyclists rode past each other on opposite sides of the road, they waved to each other. It meant "Isn't it great to be out here in the open air - have a good ride!". It didn't matter if one was on a 125 Honda and the other was on a Harley. I even used to wave to motorcycle cops and they'd wave back most of the time.

These days I find that hardly any bikers wave to each other and if they do, it's usually Harley to Harley or sportbike to sportbike etc. That feeling of "Hey! We're both enjoying the the same sport, good on ya buddy!" seems to have been lost. Why? I haven't a clue.

The OP had a simple, valid question regarding his shotgun that he bought because he enjoys shooting. "Good on ya buddy" says I, because I enjoy shooting too. Finally, I would have thought that members on a firearms forum like CGN, especially those with 1000's of posts, would feel the same way and post in a constructive, supportive and humorous manner.

I'll get off my soapbox now and STF up.
