Anyone ever have a Fluted Rifle Barrel Shortened?

Ice how about posting a pic of the entire rifle for us?

Sure I can do that for ya tomorrow. A little background on the rifle, its a rem 700 in 22-250. I bought it at a gunshow and under dismal light the throat looked good. But when starting reloading for it I couldnt get a good seating depth,The slugs rattled down the bore for over a inch or so.So sell it or look for a take off barrel? Went with option 2...within a week from the EE forum I had a nice SS barrel in 22-250.Cost of rifle from the show was 450.00 barrel was 100 shipped...then sent it to a friend of mine to get the new barrel installed.

Then the stock,I really love rosewood foreends and grip caps,so while the barrel was being installed I cut off the black plastic #### and redid the stock with a black spacer and rosewood. So i get a call..the headspace doesnt match the expansion chamber perfectly vertical so now what...to me its easy, lop off 2 inches of the barrel, bring it back to good headsapce and lets be done with it....Its a friggen coyote /gopher gun...Done deal me thinks..

Get it together and finish the stock, bed it and tune the trigger up...now for optics ..fella had a nice 6x24 bausch and lombe Balvar for sale in the EE for 1/2 of what it was worth cause he found a nicer Tasco sniper scope he wanted...I jumped on that in a heartbeat and got it...Super fine cross hairs in it and not a mark on the outside tube.I was laughing now...Throw some loads together and go plinkin some targets...

First group was .275 and second group was .290...and this was witnessed...This rifle really came together and was or is well worth the 1K I spent on it...

Thanks Philthy that pic with the pepper laminate stocks is exactly what I was looking to do if I buy a Prohunter...

Here is a pic I found on the SSK Ind web site = this would be exactly how I would want a fluted barrel to look if I were to get it shortened.

Maybe. :D Camp Cook are you looking at Encores now? EDIT: Hah! I guess you are! No worries, mate!

I like the outboard chamfer to tone down the flutes at the muzzle. Maybe I'll get my .30-06 barrel cut to 23" and see how it goes. I'm not a fan of it getting louder, but more portable with increased stiffness would be OK. Maybe I'll leave well enough alone.

Yeah I am and to tell you the truth I don't know why I already have single shot/bolt/lever/semi-auto rifle/cartridge combos that cover everything I would ever want/need for any kind of hunting I would ever do... :D

I'd probably be better off to just look for another Contender frame but no not me I have to get into something that is going to cost me even more money.

Once you have an Encore frame you can try nearly every cartridge under the sun.

I'm attempting to stick with .223, .270, .30-06, and .375 H&H in the Encore. Maybe bland, but I'd rather get to know a few really well than many in passing. Little sprinkle of .357 mag, .44 mag and 7mm-08 could be thrown in for salt and pepper though. :)

I'm looking for a more comfortable Encore stock, and I don't like thumb holes. Who makes one?

I buy my laminate Contender stocks from GunStocksInc in the States just received my black/gray butt stock for my new s/s G2 frame about 3 weeks ago been to busy to finish though.

If I do get the prohunter/encore I will eventually buy black/gray laminate stocks for it from them as well.

After you posted the link to Greybeards today I called Boyds Gun Stocks and asked if they still make encore/prohunter stock sets was told not now but they are looking at making them again in about 2 months.

I have Contender carbine cartridges/barrels that cover from 20 yards to 350 yard hunting then I have bolt rifles that cover almost every other hunting I will ever do out to 500 + yards so if I pickup an encore/prohunter I will probably only have two barrels the one it comes with and a 375 cal that give me 2650fps with 250gr TTSx or 260gr Accubonds I'll also load 300gr Sierra Gamekings and Partitons for when I want a thumper...

I feel single shot Encores/prohunters are at there best when the barrels are shorter I will have these barrels shortened to 20" - 23" max...

Nice looking rifle!

Camp Cook: I'll check them out. Are the gunstocks inc. stocks a bit more comfortable than the factory conventional jobbies? I think a little more relief than factory under the wrist would be nice. Also looking at High Plains.

The butt stock on this/my 375JDJ came from GunStocksInc my new G2 butt stock that just arrived has the same curves.

Well a change of plans happened yesterday and I ended up backing out on buying a s/s Prohunter in 7mm-08.

I was sitting in my gun room looking at what I have to do and saw that I had the G2 butt stock to finish, needed to finish working up loads for my used 17 Rem Contender barrel that I bought last year & start working up loads for my new 6.8spc Contender barrel and loads for my Rem 700 LSS in 30-06 that I had Guntech shorten to 20" for me.

I don't have time right now to take on another gun project and the rifles I have will do anything and everything that the Prohunter would have done...

Oh well guess I'll keep dreaming of my next project... :)

If I do anything in the next while I am going to keep my eyes open for another s/s Contender carbine/frame.

Yep that was me... :)

My loads work in the Contender barrel but I definately have room for improvement.

I usually load 95gr TTSX these expand down to 1600fps in soft tissue and 110gr Sierra Prohunters only expand down to 2300fps in soft tissue and I have now ordered 150 Nosler 85gr E-Tip these are supposed to expand down to 1650fps.

I plan on loading the 85gr E-Tips exclusively for the Contender barrel going to load them longer if it is possible hoping to break 3000fps = if I can get a good load it should make this a fun coyote/deer combo.
