Apparently it's a 12gauge lead slug, that's cut in half and then drilled out so that it's somewhat hollow in the middle. A piece of wire is then attached somehow to the inside and when it's shot, the 2 slug parts fly apart and it leaves just a string.
I read about this in a book unassociated with firearms and the author claims that it's strong enough to "knockdown trees".
