3.5 years ago I gave up my old work rifle, a .308 to my replacement. At the time, it had over 7000 documented rounds downrange since it had been rebuilt and rebarreled in 1996. Just before I turned it over to the new user, I had the barrel chopped, and a new chamber cut. At the time there was serious throat erosion. The first few inches of barrel had no rifleing left. It still shot ragged one hole groups, though they were starting to open up.
Its still in use, and shooting quite well, though it is finally slated for replacement. I'll have to ask the old smith that built the rifle where he got those barrels from again. So, yes, some barrels will last a while.
