Anyone ever push 2000 yards? With what Rifle?

Just wondering if anyone here has shot this far? If so what rifle combonation were you using? I know the record shots in the military. Any civies?

At Jerry Teo's fun shoot a couple summers back in Summer Land BC, we had our 338LM AIs and the 50s launching rounds out to 2600yds if I'm not mistaken and I"m sure Jerry has a list of other calibers that got out that far.

I think my buddy's 300WM may have also but I'm not sure.

Some Brits have done some shooting at 2500 yards (IIRC) with .308s, mostly "Match Rifles" (in the Bisley sense of the term). The target was a double-size fullbore target (so 20' wide by 12' high, with an 8' diameter aiming black).

338LM 2000 yards. Just found a new spot this fall that will allow for 3000 yards. Limited to a 150 mins elevation need to find another 50 mins to hit 3000.

First you need an accurate load and rifle - as little vertical dispersion as possible - sub 1/4 MOA vertical is the goal. windage you can deal with.

then you need to ensure the bullet will go subsonic and stay stable.

then you need lots and lots of elevation

then you need a spot where the ground will kick up dust cause when you go out that far, every 50yds is a challenge and if you don't see where you are landing.... Let's just say, new barrels are made everyday.

then its hold into the wind and send it..... and wait, and wait, and wait and wait and oh, there it is.

Live in Southern Ontario, where I can only read these stories with envy. Would love to find the time/money/space to reach out. Currently limited to my 1000 yard range.

How do you know your bullet is stable subsonic? I am guessing the only way is to shoot it?

Grab a ballistics program, load up your data and see where it indicates the bullet goes subsonic (anything under 1050fps). then shoot it at least 200yds further to give it time to tumble.

If it tracks, you are good to go. If it tumbles, accuracy will be hilarious - ie min of mountain if you are lucky.

Very easy to see.

The range at Nokomis, SK is something like 1600yds from the road allowance to the targets.

The British range mentioned previously is a private facility shooting down a Jeezly long valley. The targets are staged on the sidehill. Each firing point is a different vertical angle to the target faces. And yes, they use ungainly match rifles lying feet first to the target, resting the rifle on their toes with the backsight on the top of the butt!

I figured I had to shoot it to see. Exbal, I cant remember the exact FPS, says around 2200.

Thanks Jerry.

Are those the old 303's that they shoot? I read a story about Gail McMillian shooting that shoot and a 303 shooter won.

I've taken my Dsr in .338LM out to 2200 meters. I can hit oil drums out at that distance all day. I did my load development with a fellow cgn'r and am using 300gr Sierra match kings with 101.5 gr of us869 in Lm cases.

1000 meters - easy
1500 meters - count 3 heartbeats
2200 meters - count 10 heartbeats, breath long deep breaths, squeeze and wait............HIT

I haven't recorded groups on Camera yet because like I said " I can hit oil drums out to 2200meters all day" and never needed to see the groupings.

Where do you shoot 1000 yards in Southern Ontario?

Those are trade secrets my friend. If you announce them, or even PM them to a few people who then PM it to a few more people, before you know it the place will be overrun.

Spend a few weeks/months searching around via google maps and just plain old exploring and you will likely find a spot.

I know a spot to shoot 1k, but it is a 3 hr drive. My other spot at 650m is about 1hr 20min away, but those are things I keep to myself and my closest friends for the same reasons as listed above.

Nobody wants a repeat of Nonquon.:(
