Anyone familiar with. 300 Lapua Magnum?

Uuggggggghh. You just killed my buzz. I thought because it would be 30 cal everything would be ok. I guess not. It really pees me off that as a CF sniper i can shoot there, but as a civie I cant. Makes no sense.

Well to all the custom rifle builders on this forum! Can we turn my Savage 110 FCP HS Precision into a monster?? We'll keep her 338 LM

When was the last time that anyone said DND rules made sense? Us civvies simply can't operate that kind of gun safely you know. Our bullets will travel outside the safety trace that exists for your rifle. lol

Believe me, I considered doing exactly what you propose. I have a PGW Timberwolf and a mountain of fired brass too. I thought about spinning on a .30 cal barrel and a .300 Lapua Mag chamber to stay under the 8mm bullet limit which exists under ICFRA (international) rules. Problem is it would not be acceptable at Connaught for the 2017 world championship so it's back to the drawing board for me too.

By far the easiest to live with and best super performance .300 magnum in my opinion is the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum (RUM). It has more case capacity than any cartridge discussed here and has the following advantages. Good brass is readily available at reasonable prices and it fits standard magnum actions. The .300 Lapua and the .300 Norma are based on the .416 Rigby case and require larger actions than commonly available. The ability to use it on most ranges is another matter entirely.

Im assuming that the awesome 300 Norma mag will have the same issues?

Yes. It's been 4 years since I shot at Connaught so maybe the rules have changed and you could shoot a .300 Lapua or .300Norma. The only way to be sure s to call the DCRA office. I am sure they will b able to help you or put you in touch with someone on the executive who can.

Well i just looked up what the max caliber is at connaught and its 8mm. There was something written about "no improved chambers" so i will call tomorrow to find out for sure

Well after talking on the phone with FTRookie i have solid info regarding this whole shizzleshow. There is a a bc and mv balance that must be struck iot be able to shoot at Connaught. If the bullet is a 30 cal and the bc is .600 (G1) then u can push it to 3145fps. The higher the bc gets, the lower your mv must get. Theres a cool little chart and everything. A 200 gr berger hybrid with a bc of .626 means u could push it to about 3100 fps and still be good to go. For a 30-338 Lapua this is well within safe limits. Barrel wear would be on par with a 338 and the recoil would be tolerable( if the rifle weighs 20lbs ofcourse)

A few years ago I developed a cartridge I named the 300 Awesome, which was made by necking 338 Lapua IMPROVED down to 308 caliber.
I got 3600 FPS from the 240 gr SMKs. Not sure on what barrel life will be as I only have about 500 rounds through it to date, but I will be happy if I see 1500 before the barrel is done.

What the OP MAY?? be asking about is the new 300 Norma magnum I believe, not the 308 Norma mag which is entirely different again. The 300 Norma mag is simply a shortened 338 Lapua casings then necked down to 308 cal. The inventor Jimmie Sloan (6.5x47 Lapua amongst others) claims that the 230 gr Berger will get to near 3500 FPS and that barrel life is no worse than 300 Win Mag.

I am building 1 of these as well mostly as a lighter weight hunting rig, but as I just got my reamer last week have not had time to get to work on it.

OP The cost of casings and powder and custom dies is greater than the cost of the bullets. Also what is the point of lighter bullets? At extreme long range like these 2 grossly overbore 30 cals are designed for, 110 gr plinker bullets that ARE cheaper, just don't work.
If the plan is cheap buy a 22LR and fill yer boots.

When you finish and range test your 300 norma magnum I want to know how it goes. Sounds like a must have .

To elaborate on this, and perhaps make it a little easier to get a yes/no answer I put together a worksheet for figuring out whether you're within the template or not. You can find the link on this thread:

Hope this helps, and please let me know if you've got any questions.
