Specific interest is in the 357 SAA:

I have experience with the Herbert Schmidt rimfire single actions, and .38 double actions (own one), but nothing with a centre-fire single action as pictured above.

Generally speaking, the .22s are not much better than junk. Better off buying a Ruger single-six. My .38 is fair quality. I bought it for the cheapness, but within a year it was relegated to the back shelf of the safe.

I guess it depends on your interest for this model.
For collectiblity? No.
Because you've always wanted a SA and this is cheap? Sure!
You want to start Cowboy Action shooting? Ennnnh, probably not.

I also have a Herbert Schmidt .22 SA revolver with a magnum cylinder as well. It shoots pretty accurate but you can really tell about the quality just by handling it. Good luck on info though, I tried to look up info on mine and it was very scarce at best.

Thanks guys- I found an entry in Wikipedia(!) but some of the language used was suspicious- e.g. "astonishing quality". Does that mean good or really bad? I think I will know very soon. Not for cowboy action, just for self amusement; despite my attempts to look inconspicuous, I needed another diversion...

My brother bought a Herbert Schmidt .22 SA in the early seventies and in the mid eighties, he located a .22 mag cylinder for it. He enjoys it and has had no problems in over 35 years so I think they're kinda sturdy :)

My H/S sa 22lr is great. Accurate, and I can't remember ever having a misfire with it. A little small for my hand but I have no complaints at all with it.
