My group is planning our first ever moose hunt and are thinking of 18A. We will likely be camping as we can't find cabins to stay.

Anyone know if there are decent logging roads to get into the interior? Any cuts that are a few years old?

I'd appreciate any advice you can give some newbies short of revealing your coveted hunt spots. We're not going to be going until 2nd week of November.

18A is my back door. There are lots of cabins you can rent if you are willing to work to get into a lake. Tons of roads too, most in good shape. However, two things will be going against you: the lack of tags for that area, and as the previous poster said, your timing is dubious. You might make it without any snow, or you could get a major storm, in which case, no plow is coming for you. The probabilities are good for no major storm, but not certain.

That area is hunted quite heavily earlier in the season, I was up last year around Osullivan and in back of Terrier Lake a week before moose season opened, and there were many parties up there already. I was surprised, it wasn't as thick as 21 A, but there were still lots of people up there.

I appreciate your thoughts very much.

We originally had a hunt planned in 11A but the tag numbers have dropped drastically there; by 90%! Thought we were looking good getting it all setup early based on last years numbers. Don't look so smart now :-(

18A numbers published by the MNR seem to suggest tags look good with guaranteed group size of 4 and stats from last year show groups of 2 and 3 were able to get bull and cow tags respectively. What am I missing?

I'm all ears if anyone has a suggestion on an alternative unit that might work well this time of the year.

The alternative we are thinking of is going to Wyoming to one of the units that are still open for an antelope hunt. Not many are open that late but I've found one or two. I'd prefer to do cow elk but I haven't found one that would fit into everyone's budget. I'm told over the counter antelope doe tags can be had for $48 each.

We hunted 18A for four years... there are moose, but fewer than any other unit I have hunted... and alot of hunters... which didn't make alot of sense to me considering how far North the unit is... I think the logging road system clusters hunting activity. There is still logging going on... there were two main camps north of Nakina. There are many cuts, and access is good... too good. Most of the lakes have outfitters on them or at least outfitter boats stashed at the access points. The fishing is decent but you are planning to go right around ice-up, so that wont help you... there is also good grouse hunting for spruce and ruff grouse and sharptails... but my experience there is during the September bow season, so I don't know what the grouse hunting will be like that late.
