Most guns are more accurate when they have had a few (3-5) shots through them.

Especially with X bullets, I have found! :wink:

I like the fouled approach. Also a big advocate of the "one shot group"
- meaning, what is the point of impact for - one shot out of a cold barrel.

Three or four sessions at the Gun Club before the season opens will give you
a very good idea of where that "one shot - cold" will go. Other than that, no
cleaning till after the season. If it gets wet, by all means dry the bore (and
everything external) and pull
an oily patch through - but no solvents and brushwork till the season ends.

I always do it, I'd never hunt with a clean barrel.

................my win 94 in .38-55 always needed a fouler or the first shot went too high. I can't see it being damaging. But maybe the more experienced guys will chime in.

What type of bullets you are using. I am asking because I have same riffle but it has superb accuracy with jacketed bullets. Casts are all over and lots of leading. PeMe - I don’t want to hijack this post. I need someone else expertise with casts so I can develop best load.

I would check your rifle when you go to the range,fire the fouling shot at the bullseye and take note of where it hits. Then start your 3 or 5 shot groups and see if there is a difference. Don't take other peoples word for it, prove it yourself.
I had my 7mmWSM to the range and took the fouling shot,it shot 5 inches high at 100yds.
Note:Make sure you use the same ammo for your fouling shot as you use for your groups.
