Anyone had issues with 17hmr ammo

guys over on an aussie forum they are talking about faulty 17 hmr factory ammo, misfiring, splitting necks on firing and before firing, bullets stuck in barrels an all sorts of stuff.

They are gathering batch numbers of this ammo as apparently it is all from the same place to begin with.

So would be keen to gather any information you guys have had too, with anything ammo related in the 17hmr.

can further give contacts to the guy who is behind it as he is talking with manufacturer or importer soon and wants to give them a fair bit of info.

Oh yes I did had some Winchester 20 grain hollow points that split casings and had to pry them out wow they were crappy. Not only split casings but accuracy was sub par and that's being nice. Been using Cci and federal ammo lately and never a problem. And about the batch number sorry I shot the rest of my box and said never again.
 
My cz455 hasn't had any issues with anything I've tried. Winchester shoots poorly. Looking at the cases it seems that Winchesters are different than the others. The rim profile is rounder and thicker. I only shoot CCI and hornady now. Never a split case or FTE. Prob have almost 2 bricks through it in total now...

apparently all the brass is from CCI, even though packaged as different brands or something like that.
There is too much info for me to relay here about possibilities etc.

Will keep the thread going for a while an see if anything else eventuates from over there!

^ I've heard that "CCI makes it all" stuff before but I don't buy it. I have owned several savage 93s in 17 HMR over the years, they all shot well under MOA and they ALL had problems with Winchester ammo including splitting necks, full length case failures, 5-10% of a box often requires a 2 hit of the pin to ignite, Winchester rimfire = junk
 
Yep, Hornady 17gr. V-max Item# 83170 Batch# L27U18,

I bought 200 rounds in 50 round boxes, 10% misfire rate it was embarrassing.

I am not sure about cases splitting but they were noticeably more difficult to eject from the gun, I am sure if it was a semi it would have not cycled the ammunition it was stuck in there pretty good.

I should say all of the Duds had really good primer strikes.

Aside from the $9.99 winchester stuff i've had no issues in my CZ455. And i wouldn't say that i necessarily had issues with the ammo, they were just horribly inaccurate. I'll stick with my 17Gr Hornady V-max.
 
Strange... of all the ammo I have tried in my savage including the fancy 17gr polymer tips, tnt hollow points, hornady 20 gr ect, nothing has grouped as well as the Winchester 20 gr. I consistently shoot dime sized groups with it, whereas the worst groups are 17gr polymer producing soft ball sized groups. That being said I can honestly say that I have had some weak firing pin strikes when the gun was brand new. I took the bolt apart and it has been smooth sailing ever since. Love my cheap Winchester 20 gr ammo!
 
Another fellow mentioned how he could lap a piece of sticky tape around the cartridge, and still chamber it.

Which is more of a Chamber issue than ammo..... or ..

Some have said do we start slugging our chambers on the .17hmr" etc

Based on what I have seen and heard, I think that CCI makes everything except winchester. The winchester rims look different in all the boxes I have (different lots and bullets). I have heard that Winchester makes their own HMR ammo- but of course they still use the Speer or the Hornady bullets. Anyway- with rimfires it is all about matching what works. 17gr vmax hornady/cci for me and I'll let the rest of you have the cheap winchester stuff.
 
Winchester 20gr stuff is GARBAGE. I had 4 boxes of it, and the necks split and got stuck in the chamber 4/5. Sent them back to Olin and they sent me vouchers for more ammo. the 17gr winchester Supreme is ok.
 
Every gun is different... that is why I pick up multiple brands and bullet weights when sighting in a new gun. I have heard that savages generally prefer 17gr polymer tip after the break in period... 5 years and hundreds of rounds later im still waiting. It seems like a lot of people have had issues with the Winchester 20 gr, but I find them extremely accurate out of my savage. I have bought it for years without issues.
 
Winchester was notorious for this some time back. I sent my rifle in along with a case of ammo to them for inspection. They gave me enough credit to buy enogh ammo to more than replace the ammo i sent in. You may have a bad lot of ammo or dont forget the lowly 17 hmr does wear badly. If your friends have 20,000 rounds down The pipe the barrels may be shot out causing all sorts of issues.
