Hi folks,

Yesterday, I took a close look at a Cooey 600 I have (acquired it last year).

When I shot it at the range (last fall), it was hitting really high. Didn't really bother looking into it, and the rifle went back in the locker. Yesterday I just happened to take a look at it and saw it had a cracked barrel, about the last couple of inches.

Instead of scrapping it, I thought I'd at least give it a try, and do a "Bubba" job on it - a repair on the cheap (free) side.

I cut the barrel, about 1/2 an inch behind where the crack ended (I hope...)

I polished the cut surface, recrowned it, and reblued it.

The result, with a scope mount and scope, isn't bad, in my opinion. Better than scraping it for parts (if it works and shoots, that is).

I hope I can try it out at the range soon...

Was it bulged as well as being cracked? I had a specimen Cooey with a piece blown right out of the side. I think the barrels were made using leaded screw machine steel. Easy machining, but on the brittle side.

Tiriaq,

Nope, no bulge; just the hairline crack. Seems slightly wider where the front sight use to be. I wonder if that's where it started.

Hi Lou.....probably started many years ago and with rust expanding the crack, furthered the damage. Glad you found it before anything happened . But the job you did befits your diligence. Great looking gun.

I often thought that the old barrels were rolled into shape. If so it may have been a flaw from the factory but covered by the coating of blueing.

I had an old German single shot 22 with the same problem. It was a tiny rifle as it was (youth gun), and pushing legal length as it was. Sold it (with full disclosure of course), and never did figure out what happened to it.

On another note, what did you use to crown the barrel? Nice job on it by the way. There is a youtube video by the folks at Midway in the states that explores doing crowns in an interesting way. Wondering what your method is, because I may have to do a crown job myself soon.......

YKD, I used a lead ball (perfect sphere) on a shaft, with my dremel. I used valve grinding compound, and moved the lead ball around to get an even crown all around.

I really like the midway videos. They make everything look easy.
