Iv got a 410 single shot never use it . ammo is a hell fo a lot cheaper for my 12 . as far as stopping a bear I would not feel cofortable with the 410. go with the 12.

Dude, the guy is from Ottawa, we don't have to worry about a charging Grizzly around here...

I hunt grouse with a single shot 28" .410 Rossi and I really like this firearm. It's light and I like having the external hammer. But I have been thinking of switching it for a 20 ga. youth version. It would pack a little more punch for those longer shots and would make shooting a flyer way more possible...

Ive got a 20 ga. Baikal single and a Mossberg 500c 20 ga. pump. These are both great little guns and you won't be disappointed picking one up. Funny thing is that I've been thinking of getting a .410 to play around with and let my youngest son try out. I used my nefew's .410 once and thought it was great. The 20's are a little much for my son right now, (11 yrs old) and he won't even look at the 12 ga. I personally like the 20's better than my 12.

Pick up a 20, you'll like it.

Come on, play along, this was fun. So what did you settle for? Nine months dude, the people have a right to know! :p

I have one of the 12" Backpackers. It's an amazingly fun little gun. Great for small birds, pest animals, and such at close range. Definately a 15-20m gun, although in a survival situation, I wouldn't hesitate to try and peg a deer with a slug at out to 50m.

I am looking to get one for grouse soon.

How much more expensive are the shells?

When people say they are more expensive, they are usually referring to target loads. A box of 12g target loads can run any where from $3 - $6. .410's will be $12 - $14.

However. 12g hunting loads cost between $15-$25 a box for the cheap ones and say $100 for 25 of the Hevi-shot or the like, whereas the .410 hunting loads are still the same $12-$14.

So it's really only more expensive if you are doing a lot of target shooting with it.
