For you, maybe.;) For me, no.:D

But it would be better than nothin' I guess. Certainly not my first choice. When I'm grouse hunting my .410 is all I carry, if that helps.
 
Well I'm using an M14S for hunting, but everyone tells me I should get a shotgun just incase.

I always wanted a .410 for some reason..

Should I just #### it and go with a 12 guage?
 
Yes, you must get a shotgun. Should it be a .410? What do you want to shoot with it? .410's are a great source of amusement at the range, and are good for popping grouse on the ground or in a tree. They are of limited use for wingshooting. Shells are a little expensive.

If you want a small gauge gun with a little more versatility and wing shooting capabilities, get a 28 gauge. If you want a "do everything" gun then get the 12.

If your only going to have one shotgun, then the 410 is a waste of your time... Get a 12 gauge and you can use it for everything from grouse to deer to geese etc etc etc...

My wife has a .410 Mossberg and I have a Remington. Both are pumps that we use for grouse. Her's is a litlle shorter and lighter. Shells are expensive and I seem to have hard time getting the 3" to chamber in the Remington without a little force, it's not a smooth action ... yet ... I'm sure I'll wear it in over time. I think some of the guys have nailed it with regards to skipping the .410 and just getting a 12 guage. Cheaper ammo and way more versatility. Just use lighter loads for grouse and aim high !
 
410s are great for backpacking.
While not the most effective of weapons, I'd trust the Brenneke slug to do more than the 125gr would seem to yield.

I have the shorty - backpacker. Great little gun and cheap too.
No crossing in the States and 7mm magnum yelp from the little pipe.
While the use dictates the size, if not imperative, I'd go with the longer one. Less noise.

Verry effective on grouse. Refer to Gatehouse propane tank test for future hints about the effectiveness on larger game.
 
Forgot to add, my .410 is a little sxs coachgun (Baikal?) Fun as all get out especially with the little 2" #8 shells I found. Great to sluice road side "chickens" (grouse) when tired of using the .22
