Yes, you must get a shotgun. Should it be a .410? What do you want to shoot with it? .410's are a great source of amusement at the range, and are good for popping grouse on the ground or in a tree. They are of limited use for wingshooting. Shells are a little expensive.
If you want a small gauge gun with a little more versatility and wing shooting capabilities, get a 28 gauge. If you want a "do everything" gun then get the 12.
