I am just setting up my RCBS Ammosmaster prigressive ($249 NIB;) ) and I think I have the wrong Uniflw powder measure return spring.

COuld someone take a pic of how the spring is attached to the powder measure for me?

It probably is similar to any other RCBS progressive. I think the spring in the package is too long and skinny compared to the spring they use int he instructions pic.

Thanks!:)

no you have the right spring- they've been using them at least 15 years. they never changed the manual but in my case had an additional sheet added for the new spring instructions

don't have a pic but here goes:

the "anchor" (kind of pointy thing with a hole near the tip)goes between the locknut at the bottom of the uniflow and the aluminum female sleeve) is set up so it points towards you when the powder measure is installed. (dsame as in th picture)

the powder measure is set up so that the powder measuring adjustment screw is more or less opposite -180 degrees - from the point of the anchor.

you then hook one end of the skinny spring in the anchor hole, bring it around behind the powder measure so that's its on top of the measuring screw (at the point where it joins the body), then come around the other side of the powder measure and hook th other end of the spirng in the anchor hole. that way the spring will help the measure return to the at rest position on th eway down to prevent partial and extra charges etc

one of the things that sometimes happens especially with the micrometer adjustment screws is that the spring motion will cause the micrometer screw to loosen. It's something to check periodically- every 1000 rounds or so. if you use the basic micrometer screw a kiss of blue loctite on the screw threads will solve the porblem.

hope this helps. lany questions let me know & I'll see if I can dig out the extra sheet & get you a copy somehow.

Thanks John, it works prefectly.

THe only other question is the case detector arm.

It has a little pin that holds it tot he pres, and what looks like a sleeve/color with a et screw in it, under the shellplate base. Pin goes through the arm, into the collor, and set screw holds it in.

IS that correct? I just looks funny to me...:)

had a look at mine and the way you describe it it's set up correctly.

You didn't mention the spring. There is a wire spring (1 turm plus 1 short tail and 1 longer arm that has a 1/8 " 90 degree bend upwards at the tip) that lays flat in the hollowed out section between the grey casting and the blue arm which actuates the rod hooked up to the powder measure. you lay the spring with the central coil in the pocket, the spring short tail in the little hollowed out notch on the left, then bring the longer end past the coil back so the short 1/8" section catches the back of the blue arm and pushes - rotates it towards the shellplate

Yup, the spring is there...Thanks

Now the really curious thing- I ordered 2 shell plates form wholesale.

One has 10 holes drilled in it, (5 for the various shell holders, 5 so that the shellplate slides down some sort of centering pin)

One of the plates has only the holes through the shell holders- No holes drilled for the pin.

I wonder if it is an old shellplate, or defective?

I guess i'll call RCBS..;) :)

the 10 hole one is the correct one for the ammomaster (or the piggyback series)

Does the plate with only the holes through the shellholders have only 4 shellholders? If so you have the shellplate for the older Auto 4x4 model (and there should be metal pins in the box which go around the base of that model and lock the cases in).

If the plate has 5 shellholders then you probably have a defective unit

The chick at RCBS just siad "We'lll send you anew one right away"

I gues sit has happened before..;)

Now I can experiemnt with the old one...WSM shellplate, maybe?:)

the 5 hole plate is an old stock item. the centering rod was a newer idea on the AmmoMasters and PB's. I had the new case detection system, and while it was nice for not throwing powder everywhere when there was no case, the newer system available is better. It's not much money, and is much much better. It also allows for quick disconecting from the top of the press, with less work. And yes it will work with your AmmoMaster.

oops. I stand corrected. I was thinking of the newer system as well.

Thanks Slavex
