Anyone have a Savage 99?

They suck and only an idiot would want to own one.

You'd have to be as screwed up as a rabid hound to want to even touch one of those things...yeeech...;)

you should rephrase that- anyone besides maddog got a savage 99?- there's a few of us, but he's got just about every model, give or take-btw count me for 1 in 308

Had one in 257Roberts and it was the best shooting lever I ever owned.Tried to find it so I could buy it back.Dizzydan was the last guy I know who had this 99. Where it went from there is a mystery.

99

Got a couple, both in 300. Sweet guns, nice caliber.

First 300 is an old EG (its a rat) but solid and accurate. Still has open sights BUT used it to take a nice whitetail buck last fall (had Husquvarna & Remington's in the safe). Sentimental , my dad had bought it 30 odd years ago. First centrefire I shot, now I own it (from my cold dead hands only...).

Second is a sweet little Featherweight which, if I had any sense, I would simply put a Leupold 4X on and sell everything else but my 22/250.

Well made, accurate, well balanced, RELIABLE rifles

My GrandFather Hunted just about everything you could Hunt with His 99 in 250-3000:cool:
Deer,Moose,Elk........etc.
Sadly it was the One Rifle in my Father's collection I didn't get my Hands on:(
Wish I knew where it ended up.......

They are Ugly, Bulky, Sorry Arsed looking Levers though........But they Work so Dam well, Everyone should have one :)

Got to handle one today chambered in 300 Sav', and thought...Hmmm interesting.

Any thoughts?
The posts from Clark-e and Maddog aside I will be honest. They are not great guns. They are sort of a plain Ford, they just 'exist'. If the owner isn't a blithering idiot, and does the maintenance they will not let you down, but the design is not one that lends itself to a lot of owner maintance. I used to see them in awful shape all the time, and the crud I used to find in them led me to believe the average 99 owner was 23 cans short of a two-four.
Accuracy wise they are middle of the road, caliber wise the 300 Savage is likewise middle of the road, not quite a 308, and not quite a lame 30-30. Unless you love the looks and feel of it, I would say forget it. Additionally they can be a PITA to scope if not already drilled and tapped, or have come that way from the factory, something to consider.
Oddly enough though, I never saw as many broken stocks on them as I expected with that tang design.
In summation, run away, don't walk.

Wow Dosing, a well thought out reply, I was expecting another shot from you!;)

He's right guys, run away from them, that way they'll all be up for sale cheap for me!
