Anyone have a Savage 99?

I own 8 of them as a casual collector. A couple of them are part guns and some of them are higly desirable collectable. They go from around 1910 to 1925.

I have never used them for hunting but would not hesitate to do so. Although I have a large collection of run of the mill guns to very expensive ones, the Savage 99 will always be a reminder of my first appreciation of firearms in my younger days when the 99 was to me something to dream about - when the only guns that I could afford were sporterized Lee Enfields.

Very good article on the 99 in Rifle magazine a couple of years ago, written by John Barsness. It will give good info, PM me if you would like I'm sure I can track down a copy of the article.

Mr.barsness is a very good writer, lives in Montana, hunts a lot , has hands on experience - more than anyone that has replied, with the possible exception of Joe (Maddog) , respecting the 99.

Also , if YOU like the gun and it fits YOU then why not

mad dog you need 1 more- a savage 99 version of the EUREKA BATTERY GUN-
24 barrels, probably some kind of hydraulics to work the levers, and all the triggers tied together-
 
for us lefties who don't like the marlin or the winchester because of the inability to take pointy cartridges, the savage 99 was the only game in town - the winny 88 was in production for only a short time and the finnwolf was very rare and uber-expensive- left handed bolts were unheard of or custom jobs

I've had a couple.... .308 Win.... nice rifles but not my cup of tea. The last one I owned I bought because it was such a good deal... $250 with a Bushnell Banner 2.5x scope...:cool:

I actually prefer the Browning BLR [later model with the flush magazine] over the Savage 99... :eek:
 
I have 2 99Cs in .308.1- I inherited from my father,has a williams peep sight on it and a 3/32 ivory bead front sight.It's going deer hunting with me as it has for the past 6 years.The 2nd 99C I picked up in trade.Stock is refinished and is a bit rough but will make a good project at some point.
 
Wow, I am suprised at the bashing comments! I would take any pre-mil 99 or 1899 over any 94 winny or the marlin for that matter. This one here was built in 1907, and will be similar to a 37-303 when I am done. She needs alot of TLC.....

I only have a few, most of them are in 303 Savage, but all of them are a Savage caliber, don't own any in the Winny calibers. They get pricey down here Stateside, Joe knows what I have paid for what I have. I love 'em. Les
 
Have a 99 C in 7mm08.......will shoot under one inch/100 yd with hand loads.....cant say the same for my winchesters nor Marlin levers.....

I just got my first savage model 99

Hi,

I am the delighted new owner of a beautiful, original condition Savage model 99 in .250-3000 chambering. I love the feel, the balance and the way it performs in my hands. I just had it out to the range last week and found that 5 shot - 1" (or so) groups were common with the first handload I've tried and firing with open sights! :)

I hope to kill my Whitetail with it this year.

Speaking of rifles looking familiar, I wonder how many of the 99s in Joe's pics (and others...) have gone through my hands..........maybe thirty????

They are a cursed addiction!

Yah the owner of this one wants around $350.00 for his, it seems to be an older one, didn't get a look at the model number. It has the cheek raised buttstock. Also the trigger looked brass if that makes any sense. :confused:

It's has an old weaver scope mounted.
And the rear Iron sight flipped up for a different range.

I found the rotary mag to be a rather interesting idea, and also the small indicator port on the left side that shows you how many rounds you have left...I guess in case you somehow forget.

Of course this would mean I'd have to sell another gun to make room, and also I'd have to buy another set of reloading dies...collect brass etc. :D

There was something nice about the way the rifle felt though...very utilitarian, and very practical, and fit real nice. :)

Sounds to me like you are talking yourself into it, there is anothr alternative to making more room. Just buy a bigger safe!

I have a 99 from 1939 its a takedown model in 300 savage with a flip up lyman peep. It's in beautiful shape, I am still just getting into shooting it and hope to take a late season blacktail with it this year if I can get used to the peep.

Probably about 50% of them buddy.

At least you got to shoot them all before you shipped them off to me!;)
