Just picked up a Rem 700sps varmint in 308win. I'm tiring to build a target load with Berger 168grn vld , I've got some 175's as well . Does anyone have any experience with this combo? Or some recipe thats worked well for them that might help me in the right direction Thanks

Each rifle is different. I would suggest loading a few rounds at the starting level in your reloading manual, then work it up until accuracy (or energy on target) meets your needs. If each member on CGN was to list there favorite 308 load I think it would cause more stress than experimenting on your own. Good luck and have fun with it.

might have a hard time getting them to shoot out of that factory barrel I found they did like the huge jump from my factory chambered guns

Ya I'll bet everyone has a really good load . I tried loading them for my 300wby and didn't have much success with them so i was hoping they'd do better in a target/varmint style gun. I have a few powders to try out , I think I'll try out some varget 1st and go from there I've had good luck with that in my 7-08 but that doesn't mean will hit a home run here.

Hey Redbeard , when you say they did a huge jump from your factory barrel, what are you referring to ? What did you have to switch too

Varget seems to wok well for me on the hotter side with my 7-08 , I was loading 42gr with a Hornandy SST and getting good results.I'll let you know how I make out with the 308. Thanks for your help

jump as in till the bullet hits rifling I bet on you gun the bullet will almost fall out of the case before it touches

the best "jump friendly" bullet I have ever found for 308 is the 175gr Matchking then the 178 AMAX both of these bullets were awesome out to 1000meters

I think Varget is a good go to powder for that weight and barrel length

Thanks Redbeard thats alot of help I'll let you know what happens . I'll have to go do alittle shopping by the sounds of things lol!

looking at my old reloading books I keep on testing in 5 308's with over 24" barrels I have had 3 with 1/12 and 2 with 1/10 twist

this load worked best

fed 210m or CCi BR2 primers

winchester brass
175 SMK
44.5 grs of Varget
COL of 2.83 or max mag length

for barrels under 22" IMR 4895 is my go to powder

if you try these start at 43 and work up 44.5 is not a listed max loading but be safe!
if you use Lapua brass really make sure you start low!!!!!

I found that my SPS V liked the 168 VLDs just touching the lands with 44gr of Varget. MVs were right around 2620 in my rifle, and it shot better than 1/2 MOA on several occasions. Lapua brass and BR2s, loaded to 3.015 COAL.

would it feed from the mag?reason I ask is if I wanted a to shoot single shot I would have bought one,I kill stuff with my rifles sometimes the second shot is needed

No way it could mag feed at that length. I'm only killing trees with this one so no issues with single feeding. The new barrel for this gun is being chambered for the 200 Hybrids seated out far enough to leave room for 43gr of Varget. They'll be running about 3.010 COAL.

cool the OP might want to mag feed, was not meant as a dig at you

if I ever do another 308 it will be set up to launch 154 Lapuas

Thank Redbeard I appreciate your input I've got my brass in the tumbler . Gota get the kids to bed then its dads turn to play !!! I've got everything but the 175 SMK. Will go pick those up tomorrow.
I've never used Lapua brass why is it making such high case pressure?

Lapua brass is the best there is! just a little thicker need less powder to get the speed!
