Considering the possibility of having a new barrel installed on my old Ariska.

Smith said he could do ither 6.5x50 or 7.62x39 but was unsure how the feeding would be.
Would have to purchase a reamer for the 6.5x50
I know it wouldent be original anymore.
but i think it would be cool to bring it back to life in a way it might be half accurate.

Was not sure if should put in the gunsmithing forum or milsurp.
feel free to move

Would 7.62x51 (308Win) not be a better choice? Closer in size to the original case.

I have a Jap made Siamese Mauser that is made to shoot a rimmed case. A lot of Americans converted them to 45-70. I think a conversion to 7.62x54R would be neat. It is on EE right now, but you have me thinking.

Hmm yea i hadent thought of size close to original.

Figured the smith would start out with a blank .

I never asked about sleeves though.

Yea i saw the one you have on the EE.

Hi Guys,
When I saw the 38 to 7.62 X 39 in the tile, I was thinking 1938 Swedish (1896 Rifle shortened) not the model 38 Japanese....

My friend and I did this conversion to a 1938 Swedish rifle. The rifle had already been bubba'd so we thought we would experiment.

The barrel is an SKS that that had NOT been drilled for a gas hole. The old barrel was used as a sleeve at the receiver. The SKS barrel is pinned in place (as done on many SKS) and properly head spaced.
Because the 7.62 X 39 cartridge is shorter, it was necessary to put an aluminum block in the magazine.

Shoots fine and is relatively accurate.

looking at the relationship to the bolt , there is no question in my mind

7.62x39 would be a mistake

if it cant be fixed up in 6.5 Jap
It will go to 308win

Excellent advice

some of these were converted to 7.62x39 by one of the country's that had ample stocks of them

Yes I saw that , looking for info with google.
And I shoot lots of it as well already , so it was kinda a given in my mind.
But the reality is that 308 seems to fit the bolt real nice with what looks like next to 0 modifications.

7.62x39 is to small to properly grab the extractor
