Hello all!!

I have been thinking (always a dangerous thing) about Big caliber AR.

I love my AR’s in 308. There is nothing like the authority of a good hit on steel with a 308.

I was discussing this with an acquaintance, and he mentioned in passing the 338 Federal.

This got me to thinking about the possibilities.

For those that are not familiar, think 308 necked up to 338.

As far as I can tell, the only change required is a different barrel, and my preliminary research is quite positive as there is both loaded factory ammunition and brass are available.

So before I proceed down this path, I thought I would enquire to see if there is anyone here that has worked with or has first hand experience with the 338 Federal.

I thank you all for taking the time to read my posts, and look forward to all your constructive responses.

Regards and all the best

Both DPMS and Armalite think you're on to something:

If only we could use them to hunt here too, I'm sure we would see a lot of different AR chamberings here as well.

Sorry I can't help with info on the cartridge, but if you get some good feedback, at least you have a couple "off the shelf" options before you drop in to see the gunsmith.

Dont know about the ar platform but I know there is a German compagny that make a 358 win barrel for the rfb. That be fun to!

I handled a 338 fed DPMS AR once.

I almost bought it, but I couldn't justify the price tag. Now if we could hunt with ARs....... I would have bought it!

If my memory is correct I bought a sub 2000 and a gen 3 G17 that day instead........

Was it the right choice...... Dunno, but only one of the 2 now exists in the eyes of the gubbmint!
