I am currently modding my 300 Wby. Mag Vanguard. I'm installing a new barrel, stock and muzzle break. Is there anyone else out there with modded or cusom rifles? Did they work the way you wanted or did you have to do more mods?

I have lots of rifles where the only remaining stock item is the action. Even it gets blueprinted and lots of special treatment.

If you think you can have a 1/4 minute hunting rifle in 300Wby think again.

What are you looking for and what do you want to do with the rifle?

no they don't always work out as planned. sometimes too heavy, barrel too long. length of pull wrong. stock not to you liking maybe to thick in the wrist. once you build a couple you will get a better idea of what you want. depends how fussy you are. some times minor tweeks make a big difference. now i have done a few i know exactly what i want. just wish i could afford a few more.

It always takes less time, less frustration and less money to knwo exactly what you want before you ask for the work to be done, rather than have further "mods"

Chappy, what are some of the stats of the rifles you have modded? What parts worked, and what parts didn't work, for you? Any info would be great. Thanks.

I'd like to hear everyone's ideas of what they changed on their rifles. This is my first rifle mod. Once it is finished and I have fired it some, I'll be sure to post how it went..

it all varies shooter to shooter.

what do YOU want in this rifle? Is your action gritty? hows the cheek peice? lenght of pull? forend feel good in the hand? hows the barrel?

dont replace parts for the sake of replacement, replace parts to improve the guns handling and preformance. make a list of what you dont like, and start there.

Best mod for a 300 Wby is an eye guard and a shooting pad for your shoulder. lol.

The .300 Wea Mag is a pussycat compared to the .300 RUM. I would rather shoot the Ruger No.1T in .458 Lott that I used to own(even reloading only its to expensive to shoot, one must use the tool often...). A shove is much better than a snap IMHO.

svehn,
Ive got rifles varying from near stock, to everything but the serial number changed. One that is along the lines of what you're doing is a .300 Weatherby Vanguard with JRS laminate stock, Timney trigger and the usual bedding and pad change. After I have my fun shooting the hell out of the factory pipe it will get a boutique barrel in whatever caliber strikes my fancy and looks good in the long magazine.
There's plenty to like in that Howa/Vanguard action, like forged bolt, slick action and M16 style extractor. The trigger isn't anything to write home about but that's pretty standard upgrade. I don't see any reason to not build a custom on the Vanguard action.

Have you ever looked at a ballistics table comparing those two rounds? LOL. They are identical in velocity and bullet energy.

Not so in the real world. The Ultra is faster....Period.
You can buy more speed if you use factory Wby rounds, but you can not hand load to the same speed as the Wby factory stuff.
The 300Ultra is capable of another 150fps over the Wby with 180 and 200 grain bullets.

That said I prefer the 300Win or Wby over the Ultra.
The 300Ultra doesn't really bring anything more to the table but barrel wear and recoil.
