I have a Savage 93 FV that loves to drive tacks with Hornady 20 grain XTP. Every time I use CCI Vmax, CCI FMJ, CCI game point, Federal TNT, Federal Vmax, my accuracy its great for the first three shots, and after that my groups really start to open up until I run a patch down the barrel

Anyone else have this problem? Its really bugging me since my supply of Hornady XTP has ran out at the local store.

I have noticed that .17HMR is dirty, dirty ammo. Same gun as you, tried all the same ammo. I run a boresnake after 3 - 5 shots to keep it clean.

With the hornady XTP I can shoot 90-100 rounds before i run a patch down my barrel.

You would think for the premium price we pay for HMR ammo it would be clean

Have you made sure that the barell is free floated? My 93FV was badly in need of filing to relieve pressure on the barell when I bought it new. After I floated the barell, my POI dropped a full 8" at 100yds, so it was pushing pretty good. Also, when the barell started to heat, the groups opened up. Just a thought. My FV will shoot ok with hornady, but has a definate preference for federal v-shoks, so it may be just a certain preference for ammo as well.

Like I said I get great groups with the XTP, if my barrel was badly floated it would have shown when shooting a few hundred of them in a few hours.

Barrel is free floated a piece of paper slips all the way down with no restriction and lots of room to move.

What myself and my Dad have found out after a few summer with his .17 HMR is that Hornady shoots best but the VMax bullets sometimes fail to open up on gophers. You'll se a dead animal but without the 'plop' or display of internals that signify a normal solid hit
