Anyone here actually using the 9.3x66 - input required

Never got away. Ended up visiting a friend in the hospital.

I'll post what it takes to get there in mine. Might end up using 3031. It does very well in the '62.

Yours is a Husqvarna too, right? Everyone I have seen has almost 3/4" of freebore. Those Swedes are pretty smart cookies!

Hope your friend's so doing okay.

Mine is a Husky as well. I've never measured the freebore in it - never occurred to me to do it. I know, bad gunnut, bad!:D You should try RL17 if you still have some lying around. It sounds like he next big thing according to what I've read.

A couple years ago I bummed a couple cases off a guy at the range (and made sure I returned them at the cost per case!!) and did a few measurements against some lapua 9.3x62 cases, using water and a seated bullet with a groove cut lengthwise, in order to get the most accurate comparison.

I don't have the notes handy, but I recall the difference was around 3 grains, or a little less than 4 percent.

Using the 1/4 rule (increase in case capacity increases velocity by one fourth of the percentage of capacity increase at equal pressures), this indicates 25 or so fps potential.

My understanding is that the 9.3x66 was simply intended as a 9.3x62 +P, loaded to modern pressure with the body lengthened in order to justify a 'new' cartridge and prevent it from being used in a 9.3x62 rifle

Writer John Barsness (Rifle, Handloader, Successful Hunter, Sports Afield, et al) has done a lot of work with the 9.3x62. He hangs out on w ww.24hourcampfire.com - if you search that sight you will see several of his post regardging the 9.3x62. He's had several 9.3x62 loads pressure tested at "modern" 30-06 pressures (60,000 psi): with 250 Accubonds and either Varget or RL15 you can safely get 2650 fps, and with 286 Partitions and Ramshot Big Game you can safely get 2500 fps. Loaded to these modern pressures, there is essentially 100 fps difference between the 62 and 64, and less with the 66. 100 fps makes NO difference on game, and one has the option of easier access to brass and factory ammo if desired. As he states in one of his posts, the 9.3x66's reason for being is to get "modern" 9.3x62 ballistics while not letting the round be chambered in older, questionable firearms.
