anyone here had the chance to shoot the .45-70 plus it's three big brothers?

what rifles, what loads (if you remember) and what did you think of the recoil?

everyone else, what do you think would be modern equivalents worth considering vs. the .45-90, 110 and 120?
 
A buddy has a beauty 1886 .45/90 with 26 inch octagon barrel, full mag. He told me he fired it with some Buffalo Arms(I think) 300 grain loads. Said recoil was tolerable even with the old narrow crescent buttplate the rifle wears. Tried it afterwards with some original factory loads 500 grain that he got with the rifle and said he would not fire any more of them as recoil was extremely unpleasant. I guess Newtons laws really become apparent as you increase bullet weight in the big bores.
 
I've shot a 45-70 marlin 1895 a fair bit. I find it similar to shooting 2 3/4" 12 gauge slugs. It's not as abusive as my 300 RUM. I actually don't mind the 45-70 too much

I could do that...but looking for comments on these cartridges using modern gun powder, not black powder. ;)

reading online, it seems modifying Martini and Shiloh rifles is popular and achieving velocities over 2000fps for the .45-90 and .45-110 with 350 and 400 grain boolits.

With BP non have a recoil that I find a problem. And I am recoil sensitive.

have you had the 'pleasure' of shooting any of the bigger cartridges with modern powder?

I know the kick of the .458 Win. has the crud kicked outta me one day at the range as it just so happened that two others had their .458's there. theirs were Russian I think and had a butt plate, not pad. I was done after 6 shots...

In Sharps rifles.The 45/120 is not a rifle you would like shooting from a bench long term.Mind you my gun had the curved buttplate ,which even though the gun weighed 11 pounds did not help matters.This was using a full load of 120 grains of BP and a 550 paper patch bullet.I did happen to take a nice deer with that gun though
 
..………………………..In my Marlin 1895 Classic. My hand loads with a 405gr cast bullet over 13gr of Unique is very pleasant to shoot all day long. But Buffalo Bore 45-70 Magnum - Lever Gun Ammo - 300 gr. Jacketed Hollow Point (2,350 fps/M.E. 3,678 ft. lbs.) should be save for Zombie bears. LOL

well, if there are modern loads using gun powder, I'd get a muzzle break, LoL! ;)
 
These big guns work well with black. I recently sold some Shiloh Sharps in 45-70,40-70,45-100, and 45-120. If you plan to use smokeless the 445-70 will do all you need and easy to get guns and brass. I have 3 45-70, a 50-70 and 50-90. I mostly use singles. There is a definite increase as you use more powder and bigger bullets, (the reason for going to longer brass). If you are not looking at BPCR shooting with 500+ gr bullets, go with the 45-70. Jmho
 
If you like to shoot you will love the 45/70 if you handload all your other rifles will soon feel neglected
45/70 with max loads and a 405 gr. Bullet in a sand hill looks almost like you’ve set off some Tannerite - it’s simply amazing
Loaded down my daughter can shot it comfortably.its not a win mag kick more of a shove . My G.G. Has a fibre optic front and a skinner rear sight - fast accurate & You will never feel under gunned .
 
I have a sxs 4570 and a whitworth mauser in 458wm. Ive shot the 458lott and a 460wby. The weatherby had a brake
I noticed a difference between my 458 wm and the 458 lott i shot. The 460 was reloaded rounds and he stated 500 grs at 2500fps. He didnt want me to run home to get a chronograph. Theres no way the brake was that effective as light loads in my sxs 4570 kicked more
I load my 458wm with a 400gr woodliegh ppsn at 2450fps its not terrible. It has made several ppl bleed.

when has shooting ever been about needs? I'd love the chance to shoot these bruisers...both as originally as intended with BP and with whatever modern options are available. :D

also, I'm guessing the .445-70 was a typo and you meant .45-70? ;)
