Anyone Here Have Experience with Alliant Reloder 23?

I've been trying to get some powders for three hunting cartridges I'm loading: .270 Win., .264 Win. Mag., and 7mm mag (7x61 S&H). I have some Norma MRP and thought I'd add some Reloder 22 to fill in that spot on the burn rate chart. However, I've just recently learned about Reloder 23 and am wondering whether I'd be better served with it rather than Reloder 22. Alliant are clear that 23 isn't just 22 with a temperature-insensitivity ingredient added and indicate that charge weights don't exactly match between the two powders.

What have your experiences been with Reloder 23? And what comparisons can be made between 22 and 23?
 
I've burned a couple pounds of it in 22 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 280 Ackley, 7mm Rem Mag & 308 Norma Mag.

At least based on the results from MY lot #, I think they should of called it RL20 or RL21, as the burn rate is faster than my lot of RL22

I concur with Mark on this one. Reloder 23 is just a tad faster burning than is 22 [or Norma MRP]
However, I use it in my 270, and it is just great!! Good velocity, and very easy to work up an
accurate load. Dave.
 
Used it in my 25/06 and found it work good. I agree with TB on the burn rate. I also believe that RL-26 should have been #'ed RL-24 as it is faster than any lot of RL-25 that I have used.
 
Used a fair bit of RL22, only a small amount of RL23. Specifically in the 264 win. Was way to fast for it. You want to try RL26 or RL33 in that cartridge. Or just go to N570. But should be fine for a 270 or 7mm.
 
We are using 150 grain Accubonds LR with 58 grains of RL23 in a Browning 1885 falling block. Velocity with the 28" barrel is over 3100 FPS. Since it is a hunting rifle, only 3 shot groups at 100 yd. are utilized,
they measure .47".

Yes, I noticed that. It was for the Speer 150 gr. I have two observations on that:

1. The Alliant reloading guide gives only maximum loads. They do note many pages earlier in the guide to begin by reducing tabled charges by 10%, but it would have been safer to give min and max loads for each tabled entry.

2. When I ran QuickLOAD with that load--150 Nosler ABLR, 57.8 gr. Re23, 24" bbl., I got 2993 fps, but 67,510 psi pressure, which is way over maximum safe pressure (QL sets the psi limit for .270 Win. at less than 62,000 psi by the piezo CIP standard). The program notes: “Dangerous Load; Do Not Use.”

I would expect the 150ABLR to be a pretty long bullet, thus encroaching on the powder space if you load them to "typical" max length for a 270win? That said, an 1885 doesn't give a crap about fitting in a magazine so as long as it fits the chamber one could load the bullet out farther than normal?

What does quickload say for that powder charge and the 150 Speer? Is it still over pressure?

Same result. When I run the Speer Spitzer 150 BTSP, 57.8 gr. Re 23, 24" bbl., COAL 3.23" (the same bullet and COAL as in the Alliant guide), we get: 3012 fps, 69,319 psi, “Dangerous Load; Do Not Use.” Way, way over max pressure.

The difference in bullet length between the 150 Nosler ABLR and 150 Speer BTSP is .089".

When I ran QL for the 150 Nosler ABLR, I set the COAL at 3.38", which is quite long.

Edit: Addendum. The Speer loading data website gives the following for the 150-gr. BTSP: COAL 3.27", Max Charge of Re 23: 54.5-gr. (compressed) for 2868 fps. QuickLOAD gives the CIP pressure of this load as 58,557. If you go up to 55.5-gr., you get 2910 fps and 61,570 psi--the max safe charge according to QL.

I have tried running RL 23 for a 7mm with 145 gn barnes lrx bullets. I worked up some initial loads and had some good results. I was concerned about my charge weights as I did some comparisons based mfg data and Quickload for a start point. So far no pressure signs and I am over 3000fps. on all charge weights. I seem to see good accuracy but my charge was my initial concern so my data set is biased to that. I will try some more rounds coming up but the real issue is where do you find it! Powder is a tough one these days.
