Came across this pair at Cabela's site - only other pair that I had briefly seen over 25 yrs ago was when a gunshop acquired those from the estate of a deceased "Nawab" (a noble title in the sub-continent).

Yeah! more like show pieces now than anything else in their current state. The stocks have very likely been refinished at some point in time.

Nevertheless, British shotguns do indeed have that timeless appeal :) that's hard to ignore.

Appeal indeed but mere mortals like us will likely do exactly that while on our way to the guncase for the European sxs crafted after these designs but costing far less. The accessibility of Spanish, German and Italian better grade guns has made such quality (or at least a practical approximation of it) within reach of many. I, for one, am happy about that fact.

All the best!

I have been lucky enough to own a few fine british doubles. Westley Richards, Braddell, Alexander Martin.

Best I have owned was a C.G. Edwards Sidelock in the original Oak and Leather case, still in proof with no modifications, it was in magnificent condition.....just did not fit me as well as I would have liked.

Saddly I cannot turn down a profit and have sold them, but I am always looking.

I know what you mean. I have an english sidelock, straight stock SxS I picked up years ago and about the only time I use it now is on sunny days for Ruff's. I bought a Ruger Red Label 20ga for days when the weather on the coast is a little less than perfect.
We were in England on vacation a couple of months ago and I 'drooled' on quite a few in a shop there.

How do these guns break open? I don't recognize the top lever???

These are what are known as "lifter action" or "lift up action". The top lever is pushed up with the thumb, rather than pushed to the right as with the more common top lever.

Edited to add: The lift up lever operates a sliding bolt that locks into the doll's head extension.

Wish I had then hung around in that gunshop a little longer and pursuaded my father to buy at least one. If memory serves, the specimens that I looked at had fluid steel bbls and the guns were in very good shape.

However, at the time I was 20 and had my priorities a "bit misplaced" as I was expecting a girl (now my wife) to arrive in town that very day :)

Your error was not buying them both, one for you and your wife. Few things would've shown her how much you care more than a matching pair of SxS's.;)
My english shotgun is also one of a matched pair. It has a 2 engraved on the lever. Wish I could find the other.

Check out matched pairs, this is what they do.

Thanks guy!! Much appreciated! Actually the south end of Vancouver Island, the Victoria area in particular, is a good source of old english shotguns. Comes from the english history of the area I guess. I picked mine up, years ago, at Jonsons Hardware in Naniamo and apparently it came from the Victoria area. I never knew that site existed but I will definately look into it. Thanks again.:D
