im looking for info on the Mossberg 535 ATS 3 barrell combo. this is going to be my first shotgun i have fired 12ga before but not a Mossy. Ive fired a Rem 870 Express Magnum Rem 11-87 Sportster Super Mag, a Benelli Nova and Super Nova as well as their M4 Tactical. I find all of them to be good guns except the Rem 870 Express Mag, when we were firing mag slugs from the deer barrell i thought my filings were going to come loose. I have heard the recoil and fireability on the Mossberg 535 ATS were similar to the Rem 870. I will be using this gun for deer, turkey and bird hunting, as well as trap/skeet, and coyote killin'. I am looking for user comments and feedback in any aspect on the use of this shotgun. thanks all!

i have a 535 two barrel one turkey barrel and one deer barrel .if you are shooting 3.5 inh turkey loads yes she is going to kick the poop out of you no wayaround it .it makes slugs look like a 410 shot gun .i am very happy with this gun .i have an 1187 and several other shot guns but the 535 is the one i grab when it is time to shoot game .i have had her for sevaral years now and have shot a lot of turkeys as well as ducs geese and lots of deer with her .never had a miss or jam of any kind .and for only a few hundered dollars you canot beat it DUTCH

FWIW, most shotguns are going to kick HARD with slugs.

I have used 3.5" shells before and other than the price and the excessive recoil I didn't find them to be an asset. If you plan on using 3.5" go for the 535, otherwise get the 500.

I have owned 2 Mossberg 835s, an early model and a newer one. Both functioned well although they were a bit tricky to load 3.5" shells quickly.
I sold both and now use Remington 870s and an 1100 for most of my shotgunning needs. The Remingtons fit me a bit better so i shoot them a bit better.

any shotgun shooting mags or super mag slugs is going to kick hard. i just wanted to know if it was worse with the 535 compared to other shotguns of the same stature. thanks for the info it does help.

Recoil is basic physics. Same weight gun firing the same ammo should have the same recoil force. Felt recoil is different as it relies on the fit of the gun to the shooter, design of the stock, etc..

You need to actually fire the different guns with the same load to determine if the "felt" recoil is better or worse.

I find Remingtons fit me better than most others and I fell less "felt"ecoil with them. Mossbergs fit me OK and the felt recoil I observe is a bit more but not excessively so. Your mileage may vary as the Mossbergs may fit you better.

thanks for the info Woolly! i am a large frame person, im 6'3" and about 265-270lb not sure havent weighed in a while. last time i weighed myself was in the summer before a strongman competition. and i know i havent changed much since then, if anythign ive gotten heavier. from all the info ive gotten on this shotgun im sure it will be an enjoyable shoot for me.

i have the single barrel trap/bird hunting model, shot off about 500rnds now, and its a great gun. i havent shot the slugs or buck yet, but as far as the action, its pretty good and smooth. altho the finish looks good i find the shell brass makes marks on the action, its not a big deal to me, but it might be for some.
it is also a bit light as compared to say a remmington 870 or the like, it has an aluminum reciever.
all in all good gun

i went to the local fun store,( i mean gun store, haha) and i was messin around with the mossberg 535 and the rem 870. i have fired the 870, and apparently my friends' gun is messed up cause today when i fired this one it felt ALOT better. not so sloppy in the action. i will go with my original decision and get the tank of all shotguns..the Remington870. thanks all for the info on the mossy it helped me decide which one to get..

I have been using a 3 barrel 535 ATS combo for a while.....always been pretty happy with it.

For $500, the value was there.....moreso than the 870

I have had my eye on the 3 barrel combo for some time now.
The only reason I haven't purchased one yet is because of the new style forearm. The synthetic stocks do not use the same action bar setup as the wood models. The synthetic have the action bars held on to the forearm with only two little pins, the wood has the metal action slide.

I have heard of people saying that they are easily broken. I am not sure if they are just biased because as we all know the 870 is far more popular.

I have been waiting to hear from an owner that has had one for a while before I get one. Anyone have any issues?

Got That exact combo and its my most depended on gun for game. Ive got dozens of shotguns but the 535 gets to come along on every trip! Only issue ive had is that the fiber optic sight on the turkey barrel broke. Put well over 1000 rounds through killed dozens and dozens of birds!

Took my geese with it last year. The slug barrel is okay with the Lyman Sabot Slug. I would rate it as good. I don't use 3.5. I think for the price, I got mine on sale, it is a good combination gun.
