Anyone hike with a shotgun?

Just wondering what carry options I have for packing my Grizzly870.
I've lashed the gun to my pack, but then it's not accessible and I might as well save the weight and leave it at home.
My homemade 2 point works great and readies instantly with a quick underarm swing, but doesn't do so well with a pack when I need two hands for climbing. Anyone tried one of those Gunslinger rifle holster gizmos?
How about hiking with a single point or 3-point?

try the 5.11 Vtac 2pt sling either padded or unpadded... i keep mine tight to my chest while walking and if i need it just pull on the para cord release and shoulder the gun.

Hey HW,

What do you pack? How long is it and does it bang around your legs?
I was looking at that Vtac and thinking it might do the trick.

kinda personal isnt it? :dancingbanana:

Holy crap I should have read that before I posted. You know what I meant!

Yah, I saw that scabbard, but it's more designed for protection during transport. On the pack while on the move, but isn't really conducive to rapid deployment. Basically I want something that carries comfortably that can be brought into service quickly.

Yah those packs are pretty sweet! I think I saw one go by on the EE and checked them out. Can you draw without taking the pack off and how quickly can you get it out?

These scabbards are about $30US if you search Molle 870 scabbards they will pop up...
Edit, same as Hedgehog's suggestion....I Didn't realize anyone carried them in Canada.
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about speed of deployment...but if you've got long arms I'd think you could pull the gun from the scabbard off the side of your pack easy enough.

Where are you hiking?

Valtro PM5 or my old Enfield mostly, the Valtro is about the same size as a grizzly 870 and the enfield is about as long as a garden spade (lol)...

they will both hit the back of your leg's if slung behind you muzzle down but on the chest they pack very nicely muzzle down... more of a result of the sling swivel points then the overall length of the gun.

this is how i take my 1300 defender....my father got it from the forest service awhile back...works quite nice, keeps for hands free yet accessible quickly

Hey Blatt,

That's a pretty slick setup, but isn't going to work with a pack.

HW,

Yah, I'm quite familiar with that vid! Watched it many times trying to decide if this is something that would work for me. That one, and the specter 3point vid, and the tactical link one...
I wonder how it would work with the sling coming under the arm with a big pack and if it would interfere with the pack straps. On the the tactical link vid, there's some good footage of their single points in action in full gear. Granted the packs they're wearing are pretty minimal, but they seem to work fine running over the top of the pack's shoulder strap.

Check out Seals action gear in Calgary. They carry a similar pack holster that adjusts to fit a pack. Think it is made by Eagle. You can shorten it for a shotgun or unbuckle an extension for a longer barrel rifle. Looked like it was sturdy and well made.
BQSS 4.0 Shotgun Backpack Scabbard

I checked it out and it appears to be pretty much what Blatt was showing there. Won't work with my backpack. Unless there's a different model that I wasn't seeing.

wow...140 bucks thats kinda pricey aint it? Ya i looked at mine and i cant find any tags or anythin, but it does have a rubber like inside, water proof i guess, if that helps...or...it was the standard issue for Forest Service officers in the field....up in Fort Nelson, back in the day my father ordered 20 Winchester 1200 defenders and the Scabbards to go with em. they had to get the guns because of a certain incident, i believe it was the ray kitchen incident(rest his sole) at the Liard hot springs. so its pretty old. but im sure if you know someone who works for the forest service, they could get you one.

why cant you use one of these with a pack. i do when im hiking.... just not while im hunting. all you gotta do is loosen the straps of the pack a bit, the shotgun sits fine. its still easy to get out and its not very bulky at all.

if you wear the sling under the pack and muzzle down it should work just fine... there is alot of adjustment in the sling for were u want the release and tail's position.... to pull the release and shoulder the firearm is very instinctive... the BFG (i believe its the bfg but not 100% positive) has some decent features as well as the quick release buckle so have a peek if you want even more options... S&J Hardware carrys them and are a site sponsor.

I would avoid a 3pt setup on a bush gun... they sure look neat in the vids but are hell when stalking thru the bush.
