Anyone hunt for squirrels?

I was out at a place on Tursday. I was actually looking for a spot to take the dog to for upland, but wanted to do a little scouting first. I went out with a friend, so we packed along our rimfires in hopes of finding some bunnies or squirrels. I have to say they are quick and crafty little creatures!! As soon as they made it 5ft up the tree - 9 times out of 10 I completely lost them from view.

We didn't get anything, but it was good to get out in the woods for a day, and I think I'll be back with the dog for upland.

I'm not even sure how they taste in the event that we were successful?

we have an anual squirl hunt, target shoot. extra points given for head shots. the loosing team is responsible for skinning, and stew is had by all. great mid winter social, and great family fun.

Yup illegal to shoot them here "red squirrels"

Their cute lil buggers but MAN they can scare the crap out of you when your out there in the bush being quiet then all of a sudden you have one of them yelling at you looking at you right in the face 7am off a tree scaring the bajesus out of you lol

The lil tree rats always sit right above me and chirp like crazy when im deer hunting, its obviously warning other squirrels that im there and deer and other critters likely know what it means too.

I shoot quite a few blackies off the bird feeder each year, I wont do it if they werent suck picky eatters! I watch them digging through the bird seed taking only sun flower seeds....they toss the rest on the ground :(

whammy----No kidding. One guy in our party learned the hard way back in the 80's. We were pulled over on a game check and CO asked what kind of luck and buddy says "nothing but a lousy squirrel and it cost him" can't remember the fine but look in your regs-----Cowboy

Thanks for the headsup, because I probably would have shot one this winter otherwise. Why aren't Coyotes considered fur-bearing animals instead of Varmint though?

Checked the regs, and there is no mention of squirrels, but there is also no metion of gophers... Should we draw from this that it is illegal to shoot gophers... I'm really confused on this law

Used to eat them in a stew when we were kids (50+ years ago). Now I just watch "Nutso" cavort in the back yard. Nutso is a sorta-kinda pet. I just watch his antics and laugh. A sure sign I'm getting along in years.

As for the gophers, if there not protected and there not regulated you can shoot them. I find the best way to eat squirrel is to marinated them for at least a day in Italian dressing

In Newfoundland, they're the equivalent of rats. They cause so much damage and are nothing more than pests. I'd love to have a buck for every single one busted out around home!
