I got hooked on peep (receiver) sights when a friend nailed a mule deer at over 200 yards with an old FN Mauser .30-06 equiped with a lyman. We were above timberline near Anahiem Lk BC. He laid prone and used our packs for a rest. Aimed at the nose and the bullet landed a few inches lower and hit the neck. I was absolutely astounded he made the shot.
A few months later we were at the local range and he took some handloads I had rolled up and proceeded to shoot a 5 shot group at 100 yards that you can cover with a quarter. Same rifle. A testament to his ability as a rifleman.
I have scoped rifles but my go to rifle wears a lyman peep sight. I have never been able to match my friends exploits but have taken a number of moose and deer over the years.
