Hello.
Wondering if anyone hunts with a 45/70 and if so what kind of ammo do u use?
Is hornady the only brand with a tipped bullet?

I have a single shot so it's not nessary for me to use a flat nose round but I am wondering who makes the most accurate bullet. * factory ammo.*.

Also how was the performance on game?

I hunt with a Winchester 1886 (Miroku mfg) and I use Hornady LeveRevolution 325gr FTX. Can't comment on its effectiveness on game as I haven't shot anything with it yet. I am taking it out tomorrow, so maybe I can get back to you on that.

Lever evolution ammo has 2050fps at the muzzle with a 325 grain bullet, while all three federal loads have only 1850 fps with a 300 grain bullet.

I haven't looked at what others have, but from that comparison the lever evolution is hands-down the best.

Shot a Manitoulin 8-point buck last year at 40 yards from a ground blind with my BLR 81 take down in 450 Marlin (a modernized 45-70 without the rim) the exit hole was the size of a grapefruit. The Hornady LeveRevolution 450 Marlin ammo pushes the 325 grain FTX bullet over 2200 fps with a ME of over 3500 ft-lbs.

My last stateside wild boar weighed 380 pounds and was shot with a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 using Buffalo Bore ammo that pushes a 430 grain hard cast lead bullet over 1950 fps for ~ 3600 ft-lbs of ME.

I shoot a 1885 Winchester Highwall (miruko) I am shooting Speer 350 gr hot cores @2300fps I can still add 2grs more to this but have not. I also load 405 Woodleigh @ 2050fps I have shot 1 Mule deer last year with the 350 gr hot cores at 135 yards the deer ran 25 yards and pilled up. I put a slip on recoil pad on it and recoil is not that bad it is like heavy 12ga 3" mag loads. I also do not use a scope so not getting scoped because of recoil makes shooting it more manageable.

350 grains @ 2300 fps
Over 4100 ft-lbs ME
An ass-kicker of a load.
Don't think you need the extra 2 grains.;)
How's the case extraction?

...i reload 405 grain cast bullets at 1300 fps (original mil-spec)...i use it in a customized handi-rifle...i have shot 2 deer with it, the farthest being 75 yards...both bullets passed completely through side-to-side and caused no meat damage (the proverbial: you can eat all the way down to the hole)...and i would not hesitate to use it on much large game (although i have better medicine for bigger bears)...these loads penetrate 14" of green poplar (good to know if i'm ever charged by a poplar, hey?)...it killed of 60 million bison...i imagine it's still good today? ;) best of luck tell us how you make out

i seem to be doing more hunting with the 4570 and remington 405sp than my other rifles, especially in the early season. I have my velocity around the 1700fps. I have shot a couple of moose with this load and seems to work fine. They have been taken under 100 yards. In the past I have shot a few deer with this load all so.

I took my last deer with the Hornady ammo. Around a sixty yard shot, broadside, through the heart.

There was zero expansion, despite breaking some ribs. Both the entry and exit wounds were 45 calibre, more or less. Of course, there wasn't much tissue or bone to affect the bullet.

Next year, I'll try a .50 calibre patched round ball out of a front stuffer.

It extract's very well. I have to trim the cases for the next reload . I use these for hunting. For plinking I use 475 gr @1350 fps to 1400 fps I find that in hunting situations you do not feel the recoil any ways

[/IMG]this the elk I should have shot with my 45-70 this year but it was rainning and I did not want it to get wet so I took my 7mag I called it in to 20 yards it scores 329 gross 322 net

Awesome!
Congratulations on a fantastic elk!

Sounds about like my load, 14-16gr of trail boss under a 405gr TLG, can shoot it all day long out of my lil Khatadin barrel on the encore with hardly any recoil... Took a mulie with it last fall and had a clean pass thru her ribs and heart...

Of course if you like recoil then by all means load er up with that Hornady stuff and hang on :D

The 45/70 is best suited for people who reload. You can make any bullet powder combination for any application. I have 7 different bullet molds from a 458 round ball right up to a 535 gr bullet. 1200 fps up to 1900 fps velocity. Pistol and shotgun powder for plinking and stick for higher velocity. What province? Peavy mart carries 305 gr Winchester shoulder crushers.

I use 405 gr Remington flat nose at 1700 fps. And now use hard cast 405 g flat nose at 1550 fps. I've only used it on bears. I don't use factory ammo but if I did I'd use the buffalo bore offerings or the Remington express load
