Anyone hunt with a Tavor?

I like the idea of having a short rifle that could easily be packed onto my wheeler and be handy in the woods that I often hunt in ... But ...

The trigger isn't the best
I haven't heard the greatest accuracy results, one review I read said 8MOA

I'm tempted to give one a try but I've never had one at the range. I've played with one at a store and really liked the balance, but no the awful trigger. I've also heard there are some conversion kits in production? In NB you can carry .223 pretty much all year but it would be nice to carry a little more punch during hunting season should I come across an angry bear or moose. Other than that, I use .223 for deer and coyote.

What do all the Tavor owners think? Yes to a 2500$ hunting rifle or stick with a bolt gun?
 
There is an article in one the new Canadian Firearms Journal issues about using it for hunting. i haven't read the article yet.

Right tool for the right job, if your worried about moose and bear then maybe a .223 isnt the right choice. Could you hunt with a tavor; yes you can would I take it over a bolt gun for put food in my freezer hunting? No but to plink with and play with and yote blasting? Yes
 
The only conversion kits that I know of so far where meant for the US version which would be restricted here.

The only conversions that have recieved an official announcement of prototyping was the 9mm and 5.45x39. Both of those also might be put on slab according to some sources. That being said, there was a rumor of a .308 conversion, but it seems not very likely so far.

As for as accuracy goes, Mikethebike did a detailed test with varying factory loads and different bullet weights, and came up with a final answer that one particular barand and bullet weight would pull 1.7 moa out of the rifle. If you are buying the cheap 55gr fed, expect 3-4 moa.

If you still want a bigger caliber in a smaller package, I suggest the Keltec RFB in .308
 
i saw some locals hunting and a tavor was in the mix of guns . bolt guns, lever guns, shotguns,including doubles and pumps , and .22 rimfire . they are up to forty coyotes plus 5 fox so it must be working for them .
 
Hunted deer with my Tavor for 3 years before I bought my RFB. Our shots were within 150m and I had it topped with an EoTech. Plenty of accuracy for deer. Also worked great for wild boar. Typically used a federal 62gr bonded soft point.
 
I was tempted to get an RFB but I would only be able to use it in the woods for a limited amount of time and it would be more expensive to plink with. Not to mention, these are 2500$ rifles ... my Ruger Scout was 1000$ and it pretty handy.

If you're buying new, you're actually looking at closer to 3200$ without an optic. Say you would like to add a nice sling, a mediocre optic to it like some of the bottom range EOTechs and Aimpoints and some 10 round pistol mags, you're actually looking at around 4000$. How do I know? I'm in the process of putting one together and that's what I've put into my'n so far.

Will it work well for deer, bear and coyote's? Yeah and that's what I'm planning on using my'n for. But this type of rig is not for the faint of heart. I sold 3 guns and saved up a years worth of vacation pay just to be able to afford one. If you're not 100% into this type of project, stick with the ruger, or hell, buy a mini-14 if you want to run a semi in .223. They're great guns and will run you about 1000$. Good luck.

Not trying to be an enforcer, but I hope you no you can not hunt deer with 223/5.56. DNR will rip you a new one haha, good bye Tavor!

Correct me if in wrong but you can't hunt anything with a 10rd mag..
I usually use pinned pmags in the Tavor when I hunt.
 
Oh gawd yes. Why WOULDN'T you be able to hunt with one? 8 MOA? Who said THAT? Cripes, anyone getting that kind of accuracy out of the Tavor either has a huge problem with the gun, or simply can't shoot!

If you handload, here is a great start: 69gr Nosler BTHP, with a splash of Varget (I use 24.3gr) over a Fed small rifle primer. That load averages anywhere from 1.1~1.5" off the bags - crappy trigger be damned! I imagine something similar could be cobbled up for hunting - just be damned sure to pick a bullet of proper construction and respect the limitations of this cartridge on deer...we can't hunt deer with them here in Alberta but if we could I wouldn't hesitate. Mind you, I pick and choose my shots and can live with myself if the critter gets away. I can't be bothered with marginal shots. Currently I run a big Zeiss 3x9 on the little Jewish mouse gun...and that is too much scope. I may throw a decent compact 2x7 if I come across one. This little sport utility rifle is just the ticket for the zodiac on river camping trips too.

this has been beat to death in other threads and i believe the consensus was the ten round pistol mags are legal to hunt with in Ontario . the three round limit on shotguns does apply in Ontario .
 
Just had a thought ...

When firing a round in a hunting situation (ie with no hearing protection) would decibel level be significantly higher with your face being several inches closer to the muzzle when compared to a normal 20"+ hunting rifle?
 
I hunt Coyotes here in Newfoundland. I alternated between it and my Swiss Arms until the start of the RCMP'S latest attack on the rights of law-abiding gun owners. :( Plenty accurate enough for Minute-Of-Coyote.
