Anyone hunt with an m14?

That's a BIG 10-4!!! Lots of guys on here hunt with them... Read a couple posts, do a search and you'll see that they are well loved and reliable firearms for the small price tag of $399... If it's any indication, Marstar just got a shipment and were sold out in 2 days!!! Glad I got my two from them to add to the one I already have!!!

To date, I have shot 2 whitetail deer with mine!!!

Cheers
Jay

Seen & heard some people used them for hunting &/or as a safety weapon for bushbashing, hiking etc..Very reliable & exellent caliber.

Got several earthpigs (groundhogs) with my TRW M14, and also with a Norinco Douglas Hvy NM bbl'ed M14, too.

Both rigs killed earthpigs using iron sights !!

hunted deer with it last year.
Used Hornagy SST 165 gr.
And even though I could have never leave it alone.... ;lots of mods now, at that time it was as received minus the grease.
I used irons and felt a that if there was no snow on the ground, I'd have had trouble without a scope.
I have a scope on it now, but even as stock, I wouldn't feel underpowered for anything in North America - (given some nice bullets - forget about the SST for anything bigger tha deer).....

Go for it! If your rifle shoots acceptable, take it hunting.
If it doesn't - no matter if you paid 399 or 1000 .... leave it home.

BTW : where's the 399 bashing - coming from? By the time it gets taxed and sent home is not 399 anymore, and I gather that a lot of guys buy rifles on CGN for less than that - for no lesser purposes.

Edited to ad : I got a nice 10 pointer - 100yds bang-flop... all worked good....
Last but not least- if you hunt in AB or BC, please only load your mags with one round - just so you don't get in trouble with the right-doers.:D :D JK

Rachel scored 2 years in a row, 2 shots, 2 deer. Jay and Moe's pic's with theirs really got my blood pumping to use mine. Mine were just little fellas and I couldn't bring myself to take a pic. Last fall I mounted an EOTech on her, loved it. 150 partitions BTW.

I hunted with mine last year and I loved it. There is only one problem I ran into, I usally hunt when it is cold and drop my M305 in the snow trying to cross a fence. Make sure that your action is dry because my did not cycle, action was frozen. Lucky I only needed one shot, because that was all I got.

That's not good!
Snow can get in the opening behind the op-rod handle, but I never heard of an action not cycling (when fired) because of that.
The force that cycles the bolt would open your hand in a horrible way, so I'm a little skeptic...

What Sherlock Holmes would say:
You're supposed to unload the rifle when you cross a fence. that means you've cycled the action to put a round in...
so it was the snow/ice on the recoil lugs that did the deed.....

I'll try it in the winter....

anyone else experienced this?

Eltorro... Otokiak had a post on here some time ago, he hunts caribou with his M14 in the artic, NO PROBLEMS with it!!! And I'd say his environment is about as harsh as you can get on the planet, for being cold that is...

Jay's right. Just make sure you use a good grease rated for sub below temps and NO oil. Should never freeze up when lubed properly.

besides having some major malfunction, I can't see any kind of ice stopping that powerful force from the gases.

If the lugs were frozen-welded to the receiver, it might?????

I know about Otokiak. The whole thing is that he knows how to take care of his rifles - his experience has a say in this.

I'm still wondering how'd that be even possible.
was the rifle cleaned of the grease it came from the factory with?
I can see that freezing....
