Anyone hunt with old guns (the real old timers)?

taken deer with:
7x57 spanish mauser made in 1909.
8x56R steyr M.95 probably made during WWI.

taken hunting without success:
7x57 remington 1902 rolling block.
6.5x55 Model 96 made in 1905.

plan to take hunting:
.43 mauser Kar71 made by steyr in 1876. just the ticket for timber elk i think.

Taken hunting without success? 1869 egyptian rolling block and 1879 Martini henry, 1898 mauser 7x57 model 95, 6.5x55 Swede from 1900.

I do know a guy who used to take his BREN gopher hunting prior to them being restricted (1992).

I think you meant a Savage 1899 in 30-30.:)

I have alot of old guns in the older offerings but I still prefer the 300 Savage for my hunting.

The serial number indicates that it was manufactured in either 1900 or 1901. The gunsmith I bought it from claimed it was a '95 and warned me about shooting factory or hot loads through it.
The cocking indicator is on the top of the bolt rather than the top of the tang, and the barrel is stamped 30 WCF. It may well be a 99.

And the 300 savage is a great gun. I have a take down model that was manufactured in 1929 that I have killed two deer with.
I handload a 150 grain bullet with win 748 to 2520 fps and it works great out to 250 yards.

Well, here are a few, but only one with a critter in it!:D

The OldBadger has led the Cat astray!

I really want to take my Newton 1st Model in .256 Newton out and perforate a bambi. The weather turned too cold too soon this year. My badger instincts make me want to dig a nice deep sett and doze for a few months.

Went moose hunting (calf) afew times a couple of years ago with my Trapdoor Springfield 45/70 . Didn't see any calves .
Shot a buck with my 50 cal. Hatfield percussion black powder rifle this fall ....but it is only about twenty years old .

The only 12g shotgun I own with an actual choke is a field grade 30" Winchester Model 12 made in 1917. It's got about 30% finish left, but it functions just fine :). I don't currently hunt, but it would be tops on my list for waterfowl.

Have a 22 winchester
stock was redone and some custom work done to it
it is my chicked gun- small
it unique it that it is a thumb trigger- best can tell from reseach was amde early 1900
shoots very well - single shot

I took my 1888 Commission rifle for a walk in the deer woods this fall. I think the deer could smell the old grease.

Oh, shotguns ! YES!! I hunt with an original Chance and Sons SXS 12 gauge ML, and a Lefaucheaux 16 underlever SXS.
The 16 was my Gramps hunting rig, he would load a ball or buck in one side, and birdshot in the other.
Dad said he would cringe every time Grampa touched one off in that old gun 'cause it had gone off the face, and it has damascus barrels!!
I had my tool and die buddy completly revamp it, and it works fine with BP cartridges now.:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:
I also have a Remington open hammered 12 gauge, but haven't hunted with it.

The winchester site says my 94 lever in 30-30 wcf is from 1904 and it is still a great little bush gun to 100 yards.

I've carried, without firing (so far?) a .577 Snider, a repro 1874 Sharps carbine in .50-70, and Parker-Hale .577 percussion repro Enfields in carbine & 2-band length.
Actually had opportunity to fire so far? 1886 Browning repro carbine in .45-70 worked very well on moose. Other than that, most critters (birds, bears, & bambi's) prefer to walk out in front of me & say 'shoot me' when they see me carrying my foul-weather stand-by; a modern Win 94 Trapper in .44.
I bought a cut-down Springfield Trap-door a year ago with a fine bore that I plan to turn into a classy-looking sporter with some nice wood from Treebone Carving. The result should be fine for deer or moose.
