Anyone hunted ducks from a sinkbox?

Hey guys,

I'm moving to a house on the Saint John river tomorrow. Last time I was out there, there were about 20 ducks in the river just past my backyard. I can't build a blind on my land (neighbours are too close), but I thought about building a sinkbox just far enough offshore to comply.

Anybody ever done this? I have a rough idea of how I'd build it, but I'd like to hear stories from others.

Anybody know how effective this method is?
 
When I lived in NS guys used sinkboxes for sea ducking. Super effective, but a pain to tow into place and super dangerous if you don't have the bouyancy just right or if there is any waves. Sadly I never go to try on out.
Search around - I have seen plans on the internet that talked about getting the flotation right too.
 
I prefer a layout boat, smaller more easily towed and incredibly addictive way to hunt. There are lots of layout boat plans on the interweb too.
On a side note if theres enough grass to break up the outline a canoe or kayak can be adapted to a layout boat, just need some camo netting, a board (or something else to use as a back rest) and a couple of poles to secure yourself to.
 
I wouldn't go through the effort for a couple of dozen birds. Now if you start to see large numbers trading up and down the river, that would be a different story.
 
Well, the Saint John is a pretty major duck hunting area. Nerepis Marsh is just a couple miles upriver of my house, and there's a DU project in there.

There was about 30 buffleheads offshore behind my new place again today. Too bad I have neighbours on either side . . .
 
Do you suppose they would let you set up a blind on the Westfield ferry?:D
I was on the Reach the week before deer season and saw many rafts of bluebills. One flock, numbering at least 100 birds, was only a few feet off my parent's shore--and me without an NB license.
I like the boat blind idea, something to get you home safe when the wind comes up.
 
Oooh, I don't think you'll ever catch me in one of those. I'll be dead and buried soon enough as it is, don't want to hunt out of a floating grave in the meantime...

Banned in the U.S., not Canada. I know guys use them on the St. Lawrence.

Anyway, I'm not planning on sinking this thing in the middle of nowhere. I was planning to put it about 200 meters offshore of my house, and sit in it in my cozy arctic floater suit. If worse came to worse and I got capsized, I would just merrily float in to shore in relative warmth . . .:)
