Anyone Hunted with 300gr .338 Matchkings?

Never shot a MK in my life. Big fan of Partitions:D

All I said was..................
"But I also think if you didn't drive them too fast that it would punch through a moose quite easily.

Maybe re-read the post:rolleyes:

If you want to shoot a 300 grain bullet then buy a .378 weatherby. You should be thinking about a good quality bullet in the 200 to 250 grain range. Nosler partitions are pretty hard to beat for the money. The front end of the bullet blows up pretty good and the back end stays together and keeps on truckin. If Sierra says don't use them on big game then don't. I have been seeing reports on the berger VLD target bullets and that manufacturer has done field testing on big game with their paper punching bullets with pretty impressive results. I personally feel that every cartridge has that sweet bullet weight and design that makes it shine as far as downrange energy is concerned. For example if you decide on a 140 grain bullet weight then shoot a 7mm, if you want to shoot a 165gr bullet then shoot a .30 cal. etc. When your muzzle velocity starts to exceed 3000fps it's all about the bullet staying together when impacting big game (regardless of range). My partner and I took down a moose with the .378 wby at 100 yards shooting the sierra 300 grain gameking bullet. We found what was left of the bullet during butchering and it had turned inside out, failing to penetrate properly. It may have performed much better at 2500fps out of a 375h&h I don't know. I may be bias, but the partitions have never let me down and I will stick with them.

zthou,
In July I was hunting in the same camp in Zimbabwe, with a .378 Weatherby user. He had 300 grain Factory ammo, loaded with Hornadys. Once animal size got bigger, the soft Hornadys let him down badly. His buffalo got a broadside hit that only penetrated one lung. The bullet couldn't have weighed more than 100 grains of twisted blown up tinsel. He finished it the next morning with a borrowed .416. An eland that he took ended up with 11 shots in it, the last from the PHs rifle. Now, recovery shots on animals aren't known for precise placement but there were some solid hits. I'd say that big guns with bad bullets, aren't big guns anymore.:( Nosler Partitions are a sensible minimum bullet at .378 speeds, anything less is looking for trouble. I'd be looking at mono-bullets myself.
