A buddy just bought a house on 100 acres of hardwood bush in 53A just south of Huntsville. I've never hunted there before but I have a doe tag there, and my understanding is that there's a ton of deer around. Anyone else hunt that area?

Depends where in 53a. Some spots are heavy in moose and light on deer.. Others are the opposite... So spots are heavy in citidiots that want to pretend to be country

Bait and bait some more. Deer are there just need to bring them in and a feeder will work. Pretty sure gun hunt is two weeks and have been baiting with a feeder for over a month. Feeder and trail camera's are a must.

I'm going to head up this weekend to look around and take a cam and automatic feeder. I'll be hunting around home for the first week, then once our tags here are filled I'll head that way strictly for a 1 or 2 day meat hunt.

Hey 870, you will be in my neck of the woods. Lots of deer around for sure, and your trail cams should show you pretty quickly what your area is like.
Has your buddy met his neighbors yet? Does he know anybody else hunting near him? There are LOTS of camps around there, even more just north of you, other side of HWY60 in WMU 50.

Shoot me a PM if you want any local feedback about anything, been here all my life.
Happy hunting!

you have that right, and ignorant ones too. Had a friend bear hunt it for 3-4 years until one weekend the closes camp came up and seen his truck and bait setup and went out of their way to ruin his hunting spot. Crown land but they think they own it all...

I used to hunt off concession 5-6 near Newholme. My buddy had 100 acres east off Brunel Rd., and the deer were very plentiful. There used to be anywhere from 4-6 of us hunted there regularly and we always had great success. As mentioned in an earlier post, it depends on what haunts your particular parcel of land. We didn't bait or use trail cameras, but they're a good idea if you want to know what's moving around your neck of the woods and want to maximize your chance of a successful hunt. I wish my buddy hadn't lost his land. It was the best deer country I've ever hunted. Lots of luck to you and I hope you have a good and enjoyable hunt.

Never thought I'd read the name Newholme on the internet, I lived at the end of Newholme road when I was a wee lad, first house my dad built for us...good memories.
I bet there are tons of deer down there for sure.

OMG.....wait a second.....I think your buddy just bought my Aunt & Uncles place, they just moved back out west about a month or two ago.

They had 100 acres about half way down South Portage road, and logged it a few years ago! Ask him if he bought it from a man named John and his wife Marg...I bet dollars to donuts it's their place.
If it is, and I'm almost 100% sure it is, it's a beautiful house, with great attention to detail. He was a carpenter/cabinet/furniture maker, and she does stained glass.

Your friend is a lucky man, and will be very happy there I'm sure. I never got out into his 100 acres, but there are lots of hills right behind the house, so you guys will get some exercise!

This is too funny, have a great time out there!

I don't know who the owners were but he just got the place a few weeks ago. He did mention lots of rolling hills and he's had deer in the garden almost every day. :)
