I've seen wire coated dogs who would balk at cool water, and short haired dogs that loved to break ice all day chasing late season birds. Muscle mass, body fat coat density and coat length all have a role to play in a dogs tolerance to cold, but the biggest factor is drive. You can always put a neoprene vest on your dog in the late season, but if he doesn't have the drive it doesn't matter one bit how long his coat is.

The longer hair does give a bit of an advantage, but if I was primarily hunting sea ducks in February, I may opt for a lab or chessie instead.
And Norm, the Korthals Griffon is a major ingredient in the Draht, but there's a whole bunch of other stuff in there, too - Pudelpointer, Cesky Fousek, GSP and a host of others.

I have an English Pointer and a GSP. Both have their good points. My GSP retrieves my ducks and geese out of the water but the English Pointer will retrieve them if she only has to get her belly wet. But she's amazing with upland birds.

My wife took a trip to Montreal with my two kid's as one is going to start University there.
Road trip it was.
Seems the crowd got a little bored.
We have been talking about getting a new member of the family

I didn't think I would get all excited, but honestly I am.
Will be a few days yet before they make it home.
I've always found that it takes a few days to figure out an appropriate name for a pup, you need to get a glimpse of their personality and temperament. Sometimes you can use or modify their registered name, other times a literary or TV character is fitting, or an ex that was an exceptional PITA.

I haven't met her yet (pup that is) and I can't seem to get a grip on this name.
I told the my daughter if that be fitting, I would shorten the name to D.

If you train it to it will. Lots of folks have dogs that will point rabbits, and some have dogs that will point big game. A fully whoa or halt(down) broken dog can be called off of any running game. The other thing with versatile breeds is that they often (but not always) break off a chase after a short distance. My Pudelpointer pup typically breaks off a chase in a few hundred yards, which for drives on smaller plots of land is ideal.
This old gal of ours seems to know what to do. Finds my grouse without
any official training. Found a deer I shot. I was out hunting grouse and this
little two point stood out in the bush on my way home. Likes to fish and
my company in the boat needs to pay heed to their beers.
When the time comes about, clunk goes the beer can and the dog
rescues the suds. My one fishing buddy isn't onto this trick of my pooch.
He figures he knocked it over accidentally. He just doesn't get me pissing
my pants with laughter.
Hounds are good for the heart and this new pup will be a treat for us all.
The old gal will keep her in good spirits.
And of course teach her the ins and outs of what to do for excitement.
They can conspire you know...........
