Anyone in Calgary with experience unitizing M14 gas systems?

I think there is a sticky with pictures on where to weld the gas cylinder and the ferrule (?). But, for $12.95 or so, you can buy a set of shims from Marstar and Robert is your mother's brother. Get their operating spring rod while you are on the phone.

Seriously, those two fixes are the easiest to install and give the best results. But, are you sure you need to unitize or is it tight enough already? If the gas cylinder lick swings past 6 o'clock to 7 or 8 o'clock then you need shims. Most new Norincos are not bad on this timing test. Worse than that, and there is a lot of slack to be made up.

Carbonrod, 10 2 and 6 o clock with a tig welder. Find a reputaple (sp) welding shop and bring it to them. It may cost more but it is WELL worth it!!! Your #### may fall off if you don't shim it!!!! Just make sure they don't cover your gas hole!!!!!

Just my 2 cents

I agree with eltorro give wayne a shout here and find out who he deals with.

a friend of mine here in b.c. vancouver area is setting up shop and has fabricated a jig for unitizing gas assemblies. Will be able to do chinese and the stainless usgi parts.

Shimming a gas assembly is certainly not unitizing it.... well.... i suppose it does serve somewhat for this function as far as tightening and aligning the gas ports. Having the stock band welded to the cylinder nullifies any vibration of the stock band.... something not acheveable by shimming.

Also... a welded , untized gas assembly may still sit loose once assembled to the barrel.... in which case..... shimming or stippling of the barrel/ cylinder interface.... or machining the surface of the gas lock are methods of "match conditioning" your gas assembly... in this situation it's all about reducing fore and aft movement while achieving a tight gas lock AND a properly aligned gas port.

I have seen guys just go shimming away....... and end up with a tight gas system BUT with a poorly aligned gas port.
shimming is the easy way out but not always the answer.

Ishootguns on our CGN board is willing to weld them up for ya... you just gotta mail him the parts. He did over 12 gas cylinder assy's for us at the Barrie Gun Club M14 Clinic back in January 19. A great guy with great karma.
