Anyone interested in a tanning/skin prep thread?

Should we do some tanning threads for hunting season?

Seeing as hunting season is almost here, would anyone have an interest in my doing a thread on how to prepare and tan animal skins?

Alternatively, would anyone like to show how they do theirs? There are so many ways and the such that it'd be a great way to show people how to use what'd otherwise be waste, and to learn from people who know more!

So far I'm pretty new at things, but I can do buckskins, so that'd be at least one tutorial. I somehow successfully did an elk hide with hair on just recently, so that could be another, though someone with more knowledge might do a better job at that. If you would be interested in showing how you do things, chirp up!

P.S. I put option #2 because I know taxidermists have a hard enough time as it is, and I honestly do feel that if I had the money, it'd be worth it to go to them, as they're professionals.

Who was it who clicked that they could do a tutorial as well? I forgot to makes voters visible.

Also - anyone with hides on the lower island who want to learn or donate them to the cause, let me know. I'm not that good a hunter to guarantee I'll have a hide by the end of season:p:rolleyes::eek:

For anyone interested in doing their own skins this fall, this site is a great place to do reading:

They're a small close nit community, like here. Pretty much everything you will want to know is available through the search function. If you're planning to give tanning a whirl, it's a really good idea to get lots of reading done before you get your deer, as it didn't make much sense (to me at least) the first time.

Also, a good book for beginning buckskinners is "Deerskins to Buckskins". That's basically what I'll be following on the first tutorial, and it's written so that someone with zero knowledge of hide working will come out with beautiful skins at the end.

I would sure like to see one. I just yesterday gave a bear skin to a friend of mine because I didn't wan't to pay to get it done. (not quite big enough for a once in a lifetime rug) But I sure would have liked to tan it myself to save a few bucks. I'd still get it done by the taxidermists for the other parts (head etc) but the taxidermists I know send it away for the tanning anyway so I don't feel bad about that part)
GREAT IDEA

Have at er! I think it is a good idea, probably a good thread to stick at the top of the hunting forum.

I'd definitely be interested in such a thread. I'm a good way through turning a deer I got last year into buckskin. Assuming I get a deer this year will probably try leather. Would love to see tutorials but also just have a thread to discuss with those who are also doing this

Ive been looking for picture tutorials for a long time.
Maybe you would be able to post pictures of the process.
Read a in many textbooks how certain layers of the skin need to be left on, depending if you’re doing the skin hair on or off.
But it would be nice to actually see which layers.

Defiantly a great idea.

Buffalo, or elk?

Yes, I've always wanted to try tanning a hide (or hides, if it goes well) of game I've taken myself, so maybe it will be this year.

Well then, that about settles it. Going to have to wait until I get a deer (fingers crossed) before I can do much. If anyone gets an animal in the lower island area and doesn't want the skin that could help too. That or we could do a tutorial together if you'd like to keep the skin.

By the title I thought this may be one of demthere meti rosexual threads about unmanly things, but then I saw which forum it was in:)

"Anyone interested in a tanning/skin prep thread?"

In that case it'd be listed with westicle's Fine Art of Manscaping thread:p

I like the idea, can make it the old way , brain tanning.
Did it once , still have some of the deer hide, very strong , and soft.
can slip or keep the hair, but membrane on the underside must be scraped off.

Is that an offer ;)? I've never done braintanning, though I've read about it.

Turns out it was elk...... I had never seen either in person and didn't pay attention.

Interested as well. I didnt know what to do with my deer hide, so I gave it a few salt and borax treatments. Would be nice to turn such a thing into gloves or a garment, shooting bag/pouch etc.

would like to make some skin on skin for the ladies.:D

I perfer the natural sun to tan my leathery skin, though in the Winter time I do frequent the local tanning salon.....oh wait....we're not talking about that are we...

For fly tying most "home-made" things are just tossed in a big thing of Borax and let to dry. This isn't actually tanning but is kinda a skin prep as it just dries the skin out.
