Anyone interested in a tanning/skin prep thread?

Should we do some tanning threads for hunting season?

I don't know why, but I find the tassles on the bikini bottoms disconcerting:eek::puke:

I would especially like to see a tutorial on how to do a bear hide with the hair on, but I will follow along with the thread whatever you end up doing.

Well, first thing that would require is a bear skin, and possibly someone with more experience.

Oh, and a pressure washer...

If anyone fulfills two of the three of those on the south Island, I'd like to talk to you...

Since we're at it -

I believe stop rot is just a commercial anti-bacterial solution. I've seen lysol antibacteria and simple green antibacterial used.

NOTE!!! don't make the same mistake I did. You take it down to just ABOVE the hair follicles. If you go too deep you will expose, or cut the base of the hair's roots and they will pull free... it's a really aggravating mistake to make.

I have a pressure washer and will work on getting the bear skin. More experience, you're on your own. Is south island in Lake Ontario or possibly Georgian bay?

Did my elk hide four years ago.... make sure you can dedicate the time to do it right, mine got too dry on me and I had to use my truck to flatten it out, still has a big ridge in it.
Used water and alum to cure it but I can't say it worked all that well.
Since sent my black wolf and bighorn sheep hide to Halfords in Edmonton, finished results are much better now and pretty reasonable considering how many hours it takes me to do it. I do want to learn the trade though as my great Uncles did alot of trapping...
Need recipes for keeping the hair on!

Alrighty - I'm set up for tanning, however I can't get out of the city to hunt! If anyone is in the Victoria area I could use a lift out and back to the woods... don't mind about hunting by myself, I just don't have transport. I'm willing to split gas to make your trip cheaper too.
