Anyone into antique aircraft guns?

A few years ago some guys went up into the Kispiox mountains and gathered up the dual 20mm tailgun mount from a US B-36 bomber that crashed there in the 50's. When they landed at Smithers airport they called the RCMP to see how they would go about transporting everything, ammo included, to the Smithers museum. The local cops colllectively soiled themselves and ran around threatening to arrest everyone in sight. Once everyone calmed down I think they just loaded it on a truck, tarped it and hauled it to the museum.
The story about the bomber comes on the History or Discovery channel every once in a while. Its called "Lost nuke".

That story is very interesting. i would like to see that discovery show.

cheers

I have an aircraft Maxim that I am cleaning and restoring to some degree. Still looking for some parts too. It will be a nice display when finished. This Maxim seems to be .303 chambered. That make sense to you guys?

the lancaster museum in nanton, ab has some guns on display iirc, plus it's kitty corner to the blue sky railway and a good burger place so the whole family has a good time....

Casull,
Good project.
I'm building a 1918 Fokker D7 (flying) and still need 1 lmg o8/15 for it.
Interested in it going to a good home (airplane?)?
Let me know what parts you require, I may be able to help.
BTW, .303 would be quite unusual but 7.92mm isn't far off in appearance or rough measurement.
Regards,
Maxim08

I was involved in the removal of 3 only complete gun turrets from the crashed B-36 bomber in northern BC. They were airlifted from the crash site to Menziatin and then trucked to Terrace. After securing them in a locked shipping container.the Terrace RCMP were informed. After a quick inspection.since each cannon weighed 100 lbs each and fired electrically primed 20mm rounds..no action was taken. We then brought in a gunsmith from Vancouver and de-activated all the cannons. One turret is on display in a musuem in Terrace and Smithers.....and the last one is on display in my den.

Read my new links about the B-36 crash in BC............I presently have a complete gun turret with dual 20mm cannons. Type in....broken arrow into this site search engine and read.

INQUISITOR:
By chance was it Canadian manufactured ? If so do you have the inspector numbers off that plane ??
Always interested as my dad was one of the two test pilots that flew all the planes produced at Norduyn during WW-11
If you are interested in Harvards I have a picture taken at Norduyn of the 2000th plane produced, I can e mail it to you.
Regards
John

KLUNK;
I see you have one of the guns we imported years ago,
For those interested we have a deactivated one available with all accessories....
John

If someone is interested, we have a deactivated Browning in 303 caliber.... As used on the Lancaster and Spitfire aircraft....
Over the years we have supplied aircraft guns and AA guns to many museums and collectors all over the world, wish we had kept more....
We just sold our last quad mounted .50s set ....
Anyone looking for pictures etc let me know
John

You're right, they've got a few, IIRC.

Interesting story-When the WCAM(Winnipeg's air museum) got it's F-86 from Pakistan, it still had it's 6x .50's live and LOADED:eek: Sadly, they're now dewatted, but still in situ. I used to volunteer there, and if I'd been there the day the sabre came in, you better believe there would only have been 5 ma deuces in the airframe;)

smellie, that's a cool story. Those old timers at Brandon are awesome, they've got some GREAT wartime stories, and aren't afraid to share. A terrific museum, it's a real treasure.

Hi Ollie
Fighter aircraft don't use MA Deuces they use M3 Air cooled (M2 HB heavy barrel MA Deuces is ground mount)
Cheers

I once brought home a 20mm oerlikon from a crashed B24. but My father said "YOU ARE NOT BRINGING THAT IN THE HOUSE!"
Had a 53 Ford at the time and a good length of the barrel was sticking out of the trunk! Sold it to another guy for 10 bucks.:D

Are there any museums in canada that have actual ww2 aircraft on display?

The Aviation Museum in Ottawa has an excellent selection, including a German Horsa bomber from WW1, pre-WW1 Silver Dart, Spitfire, BF-109, Hurricane, and tonnes of other great planes from that era, and it also includes and entire section dedicated to the Avro Arrow, which has the front half of the actual plane and an intact engine.

It's a great place, and with the addition of their new hangar for restoration work and surplus storage, there are even more aircraft to go see, including the only remaining Northstar in the world.

We have a 40mm Bofors at work that we are using to develop new ammunition. I had the chance to fire it once last year before other priority trials got underway.

Here are some picture taken there some years ago in Ottawa. Click on thumbnails to view albums.

The Pima Air Museum just finished getting a Canadian Blenheim trainer ready for display. Being a trainer, it didn't have a gun, but we fabricated a lookalike barrel from some PVC pipe and stuck it in one wing where it would have been.
