Anyone into fly fishing?

Been flyfishing for the better part of 10 years and still love it !! You can`t beat buzzing around in your float tube (just bought a new Fish Cat 4 tube....awsome compared to the old doughnut types, but will still keep mine as backup) casting for big fat Smallmouth Bass or toothy Northern Pike or slow trolling for Walleye ,not to mention Bows ,Specs and Browns. Then there`s roll casting small streams for spooky trout.
This being early Autumn.....this IS MY FAVORITE TIME to cast a fly or break out the canoe and spinning gear and have fun.

recently bought a TFO 4pc 6wt to play with. very very very disapointed. don;t think i'll be touching TFO again. for the same price, my Dragonfly Kamloops 6wt is a 100x better.

I started with dry flies. tricky, but teaches you good form and habits. paid off when I took the 8 & 10wt to florida last winter. no place for slop.

if you get a vest get a MESH one. pays off in the summer, and isn;t so heavy in the rain.

if you need practice, the creeks around whitecourt are FULL of grayling. dumb as dog ####, but really scrapy. good fun. a royal coachman, or anything shiny pays off.

I've been flyfishing all my life, for the past 40 years. The thrill of an atlantic salmon caught on a really small no.12 blue charm wet fly is indescribable. If you're new to it, obviously it will take some practice and a lot of patience. But, hey, being hunters, we know what that is all about. This picture is from last July on the Humber River.

Do you know what the top Fly Fishing guides call 4 pc Rods? Kindling :)

I got into it this spring. Lotsa fun, even if you are not catching anything.

I agree, its an expensive hobbie.

I picked up a few books from wholesale and it seems you can read and read, but if you dont go out your not gonna learn.

Been flyfishing and tying my own flies for going on 35 years. It is the only way I fish, just too much fun!

I mainly use a 6wt rod with wt forward and double taper floating lines. Add a short sink tip if the need arises to get down slightly deeper. IMHO, the best flies to start learning with are small 12-14/16 wet or soft hackles. Easily cast and can be fished similarly to a dry or as a streamer. Keep your casts short, around 15-20 feet, you will learn to watch your fly for signs of a strike. Distance casting will come with time if need be but often stalking skills such as you would use hunting and learning good line control are much more useful. Very visual!!

I use a small bag to carry my gear in. Vest gets used on trips to places I haven't fished before. I don't care for the float tubes, 12-15 foot canoe is about perfect for me. I use a tackle box for my fly gear then, well secured.

Sept/Oct is my favourite time to be fly fishing, esp in the foothills as I can combine the trip with a grouse hunt for a great cast and blast. Don't give up, spend the winter reading, join a club, heck if you live in the South Country, when a Chinook blows in, you can cast a fly in Jan/Feb.

Who would of thunk that it would be so addictive and fun

Cruising threw the local UFA and lo and behold what do I find?

Just starting to get the hang of it (no fish yet but I'm gettting better) to put it all away and wait for spring. Go figure.

Just need a vest from Bass Pro and all is well :D

Been flyfishing for a long time now (still terrible tho' :D ) and the son started when he was 10 and 16 years later he's great at it. I got the Son-in-law started 3 years ago and he's hooked real bad. I'll probably get him a Fish caqt this Xmas. Daughter is receiving a 4 pce 5 weight for Xmas this year.
Wife used to tie my flies but old age and poor eye sight has limited that a bit.
It really is a nice, relaxing pass time. I walk 2 minutes out the door of our cabin and I'm flipping dries in the River.
My favourite is small streams using 3 weight and smaller. A 12" 'bow on a 3 weight is like hunting bear with a 22. :p
