Anyone know about the detent on S&W 686 rear sights or Meprolight

So I replaced the plain black sights on my S&W 686 with a set from Meprolight.

Pretty easy breazy.

Only snag I hit was on the replacement of the rear sight adjusting screw head. I couldn't get the detent to fit into the detent hole on the screw head.

However, it screwed in fine without it.

I was wondering, what purpose does this detent and detent spring serve?

Can I just skip replacing them with no real harm?

My amateur instincts tell me they're just there to make audible clicks when adjusting the sights left and right.

As always, any help would be appreciated.

The detent spring does give you a feel when raising or lowering your rear sight and in many cases stops the screw from moving when you are shooting.
It may or may not move on you. Keep an eye on it while you are blasting away to make sure it does not back out.
Do you still have the little pin and spring or did they go bong on you.?? I might have a spare one.
good luck and enjoy.

They exploded on me, but I found them both (I use a drop cloth now when I work on my guns for just such senarios).

They just didn't fit in the hole in the replacement sight. I found some really fine drill bits so I'll probably just enlarge the hole by a fraction.
