Does anyone know anyone who's a serious mosin collector? I'm looking to chat trying to source some select items. I collected mosins for years but due to unforeseen circumstances had to sell out my collection, I'm rebuilding it now but notice early mosins aren't as flourishing as they were a few years ago. Anyone here able to point me to people to discuss it with?

I research as much about the Mosin and other various Russian (imperial and Soviet) weaponry as I can and I would be happy to share information about history and features. I suggest you sign up for gun boards. The forums there have the most serious Mosin collectors and researchers from the USA and Ukraine that I've found thus far.

I have a variety of them (all different models), and am looking to acquire more, however I don't really consider myself a 'serious' Mosin Nagant collector (I try to be a generalist). To me serious means that you want all the arsenals and minor variations within the same models.

I am always willing to learn and share what information I have acquired. Milsurps.com has some pretty serious Mosin Nagant collectors on there as well (one guy with both a 1907 carbine and a Kholodovskii trials Mosin) however I am sure they are kicking around on other boards as well.

Well, being a "serious" collector in Canada is nearly impossible because nothing is available but you can be a serious dreamer or get US citizenship haha.

I'm sure there are knowledgeable people here, but if its information only you want, a very good place would be 7.62x54.net. Its not the fun place like here, but accurate and historical info they have.

I wouldn't say nothing is available. It is true the States has more quantity, however we do have a fair number of Finnish Mosins considering our size. The main thing is that people are just holding on to them now, where as before everyone was willing to buy and sell. Importing is also always a option, however with the monopoly money we call our dollar it might not be the best decision at the moment.

I have acquired some rare Mosins in Canada (Soviet M91 Infantry, and Dragoon). They are out there, you just have to wait for it.

Collecting Mosins is challenging proposition. Main challenge is finding unrefurbished examples that are as rare as palm trees in Nunavut. To soviets mosins were just rifles that should function and they didn't care about matching parts and stocks to original rifle when they refurbished and stock piled them. That's where most of our mosins come from. Finns who had open conflict with ussr and captured many rifles also refurbished them and made their own changes or even built new ones on their receivers. So finding unmolested variants is the most challenging step.

I've seen a few Dragoons for sale but they were all Mixmasters and /or had 91/30 replacement handguards.

You're right though. There is some stuff available, just not much. Not anymore anyway. Most people don't care enough about Mosins in Canada. Just a handful of us.

Divorce forces you to do things you'd never want to do. I'm a collector of the variations. I had 30 different variations of 91/30, several m38, a few m44, a Finn m91 a Finn m39, Spainish civil war mosin 91/30 in a complete Spanish made stock, an ex dragoon. a Vietcong captured m44, mosin sniper, a 91/59 other Soviet items that I felt needed to be tucked in around for the variety a dewat SGM belt fed machinegun four different svts and a number of sks .. Now to start over I picked up a nice legit sniper kinda hard to find these days with so many replicas floating around the market. And I've decided to stick to the harder to find end of it for starters. I'm looking for a Russian m91 dragoon or cossak, the Finnish mosins and others like Albanian Hungarian etc.

Lol gungeek I know him personally, we've shot mosins together at service rifle shoots, we lived 20 minutes away from each other for years.

The Russian Mosin Nagant Forum
is another neat site. Not necessarily for picky collector types, but a good, lighthearted atmosphere. I go there nearly every day. Also Southern California Mosin Owners is a good one.

Others will chime in with good info. Have fun!

Never met a serious Mosin collector. Those I have met were jokers, one of them possibly insane in a good way.I met serious Mauser collector, guy was as charming as sober Scott on Sunday morning...

There are a few serious collectors but they ain't selling according to the grape vine. Most rare mosins in Canada are owned by guys that don't know what they have & just dying to turn them into a dandy hunting rifle with a hacksaw and belt sander. Diligent, hourly scanning of the EE, gunshows, gunshop web sites and every auction in canada will eventually get you some nice stuff.

desporterizer: Scary thought, isn't it? My gunner partner and I have tables at a few gun shows. I just cringe when I hear the word "restore" when milsurps are being discussed. I am talking about mutilating full dress milsurp rifles, not sporters being brought back to milsurp configuration.

I admire you guys that have the patience and skill, along with a bottomless supply of determination, that work magic with some of those poor old rifles. I am not saying that there aren't some really nice sporters done up from milsurp rifles. I know the drill. Back in the day.... I am guilty. I mutilated a nice CZ 8x57. Thankfully, I had bought two from the old Army & Navy stores, one in Regina and one out in New Westminster.

The "it's your rifle, do what you want with it" train of thought has spelled the end of many a nice old milsurp.

To the people who will take exception to my humble opinion, save your energy. I am just one tiny voice. I do what I want with my guns, you do the same. :)

My worry is older collector dies and family is not interested or not knowledgeable enough to sell firearm collection to someone who knows its true value. In effect collection ends up destroyed by RCMP.

I've known so many older collectors who've passed on and seen they're collections get turned in and destroyed. Even after they were offered good money, it's sickening.
