Anyone know anything about killing weasels?

What type of trap are you buying specifically (conibear, live trap, leghold) because each will require a different set up to be effective. Also, if it can kill a mink it will probably kill any barn cats you have around so watch where you set it or pen up your kittys (assuming you don't want them dead too)

It's a jaw type leg hold trap. Didn't know you could still get these, esp. on Amazon!
The barn cat is old and useless. Lives in the same space as where the mink is but does not seem too worried about it. Not a good ratter either! I'll make sure the cat is penned up out of the barn or my wife will have another thing to be sad about! Thanks for the tips!

Rat traps we got!
Since I don't think the animal will fall for peanut butter, we will camo the rat traps along its suspected path and hope it steps on one. I will set up on the other side of the wall, in the coop, with a shovel, machete and pitchfork and wait for it to poke its head out and clobber the crap out of it.
Gonna camp out tonight between 8-12 and see what happens.
Thanks for the sss tip FLHTCUI! Got it!

Dunno if yer dumb or what, but you got over a dozen dead chickens worth of bait at your place, no?

I trapped out a family of greater weasels using a strip of meat off one of the victims (a half grown turkey, in this case and got three in three consecutive nights. They ARE hell on the mice, so got taken a long ways off to the other end of the property, and let loose into some pretty good habitat.

The lesser weasels around here don't bother my chickens, and I have very few mice in my shop. Works for me.

Do a search for "Weasel trapping set" and you get pretty close to the modded unit in the link above. Essentially play on their curiosity and their need to explore small openings and holes for possible food.

Oh. Give your poultry a place to sleep that can best be described as "airtight", or you are gonna lose a lot more sleep and a bunch more poultry.

BC Wildlife Act section 25.2, IIRC or about there, covers livestock protection, and gives the owner a pretty broad range of things you are allowed to do that are not legal for hunting, stuff like using a light at night, etc.

But honestly, spend $15 on rat traps and wire cloth, a half hour modding and setting them, and stay caught up on your sleep.

Cheers
Trev

Weasels like to go into holes, so build a box of some type with a hole in it just large enough for a weasel to go through, and thus save catching your cat.
Liver, like chicken liver, is about the best bate you can get. Place the bate so the weasel has to go over the trap to get to it.
Completely forget about your human scent, as it means nothing to the weasel. Just make an inviting looking pathway over the trap, inside the closed in box..

If my wife and kids weren't so upset, I would be a lot more jovial! One of the roosters that got killed last night was a survivor with attitude and my kids' favorite. My wife is almost crying as we've had a bad year on the farm due to the lack of rain and now, we have to get more layers. So yeah, I feel very vengeful right now!
I hope I nail the thing tonight! We can't afford to lose more birds!

You may need to change your location based on the above... That being said, sounds like a skunk or other larger weasel... Doesn't sound like the small ones... I'd get stainless steel wire window screen, cover the floor and 4 feet up the walls.

Update!
Mink came out around 12:30 into the paddock. Got another chicken. My wife was outside and saw it. I was at work. She called her brother who managed to get a few shots off at it and did hit it. The mink disappeared into the barn again and hid. Around 6pm, the family heard a small commotion outside. Apparently the mink was seeking water and our mini dachshund picked up its scent and attacked and killed the beast!
My buddy Mr00jimbo will post the pic of the kill. I suck at Photobucket!

Thanks for all your advice. Our dog is sitting on the bed now feeling very proud of himself!
I sure hope there are no others!!

A 110 Conibear will work, I prefer to keep the smaller weasels around the cabin for mouse and squirrel control, but then I don't raise chickens.

We get various sizes of weasels here, from the 110 size . . .

to the 330 size . . .

Still alive, so what your saying is I am safe to read further posts while drinking coffee?
I hope you bought the dog a steak for his/her brave actions too?!
There are lots of escaped Minks and ones that have been intentionally released by those misguided PETA supporters.
They are still lots in places like Richmond and Delta , hell seen one on Hwy 17A one morning while riding to work and had I realized what it was sooner would have stopped and bagged it for a trip to the taxidermy guy.
I hope you have learned something about those critters cause as sure as bears _ _ _ _ in the woods there will be another one come and visit you.
By that I mean be prepared and go get it ;)
Best Regards and Trust the flock will be rebuilt to pre Mink visits.

Yes Rob! You are safe...for now! You are right about the PETA idiots. They released a whole bunch in our area around 20 years ago and farmers ended up with a huge loss in lifestock. This morning we woke up to the smell of skunk! Our brave dog got sprayed once by them critter.
Not much we can do about increasing protection except put up mesh wire in the enclosure. We have open areas where chickens and ducks and a rabbit hangs out and there is no way of sealing them off.
Thanks to the guys here, we now have the info, trap and gun ready for the next invasion!
The dog got a huge, get this, chicken dinner! He threw up on our bed last night!!

I see I'm too late to the party...

I've shot and trapped plenty of weasels, skunks, etc. Weasels are very easy to trap with a rat trap nailed to a tree a few feet off the ground and a stick leaning, leading up to it...for bait just use the bloodiest piece of meat you can find...like liver or heart...skunks go into live Havahart-type traps easily.
