Anyone Know How to Calibrate Mitutoyo Digital Caliper?

Insize makes some very good and well priced tools; nothing wrong with them. For anything non-precision, the Mastercraft caliper will work ok. However, as I am a machinist, the only mastercraft stuff n my box are blunt force objects like hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers, while all my precision measuring tools are Starrett, Mitutoyo or of other quality makes. Like anything, when you buy the best you are paying for quality. As long as a Starrett or Mitutoyo is well maintained, they will work almost forever. On the other hand a Mastercraft will break or wear and will have to be replaced, sooner if it used often.

If you find yourself in need of accurate measurement (for home purposes) one dodge of sorts, is to gather up some accurately made parts that are of a known size, and measure them to see if your 'feel' is good and consistent.

Hardened and ground pins are really really cheap, bearing balls are accurately made, as are bearing races.

Essentially, when you do this, you are calibrating YOU to be able to repeatedly get the same or nearly the same enough measurement usng the measuring tools you have to their best advantage.

Essentially that is what goes on when measuring tools are sent for calibration. The lab uses selected accurate known sizes, and checks throughout the range of movement to see that when measured, the measurement matches the Standard (the accurate piece being measured).

Using multiple types of tools to check and cross check your measuring (eg: using a micrometer then a caliper to measure the same dimension) is another way to come up with a reasonable confidence in your measuring skills too.

Read the book Fundamentals of Dimensional Metrology, if you are really interested. It's a sleeper, unless you actually are! Interested, that is.

Don't ever f*** with the gib screws on your Mitutoyo digital calipers unless you know what you're doing. Most people don't.

There's a reason that the new ones have a 'film' over the holes where the screws are. It's so Mitutoyo can tell if you f***ed with them.
