Anyone know what on the barrel?

That looks like a replacement stock.

The trigger may also be aftermarket. The 788's I'm familiar with all have an angular plastic safety knob, that one is round and appears to be metal.

Yeah, the safety looks different. Not sure if it's a replacement stock, from the woodgrain pattern, looks to be like what they came with?

Question for the Remmy fans, did they ever make rifle barrels with just rear screw holes, and no front screw holes?

There is or has been about 3 or 4 factory chambered 308 Win barrels and one factory chambered 243 Win barrel here, from Rem 788's, and the only one without the front sight hole is a barrel I cut off from 22" to 19". They were all originally 22" though - I never owned an 18 1/2" carbine barrel.

Thanks! Hope to! Now I just have to figure out a good load for the rifle.

Don't load too hot. The rear locking bolt on these isn't as forgiving as a 700. Everyone Ive ever owned has been accurate though, and ive owned at least a half dozen. Still have a 7mm-08 carbine that I love taking for bush walks. - dan

Yes, I don't want to experience that. Best idea is to work up a pressure series to see where my rifle is a happiest at.

Update on the rifle.

Received it today, looks like a interesting one! Checkered but plate that has a widows peak, steel grip cap and looks to be a fairly well done novice checkering job.

It has a muzzle break... Not sure what to do? Looks to be pinned, so a probable cut short barrel then added on to make legal?

Unless that barrel was extremely short, it won't matter much on a bolt action. OAL is over 26"? - dan
