A friend sent me this picture asking if I knew what it was.


apparently its 22cal and breech loaded. He said he can't see any markings, but hasn't removed it from the mount to check the other side.

It is a Belgian made Flobert target pistol. Given that it has the simplest, weakest action, with the hammer doubling as the breech block, if it is .22, it is probably designed to shoot BB caps.
 
Also known as a Parlour Pistol from circa 1870's or slightly earlier. Unique to the time period- usually used as entertainment after a dinner or social gathering when a target would be placed in the fireplace and gentlemen (ladies too in some cases) would test their skills. Used a very low powered rimfire in either .22 or 6mm with some at 9mm rimfire. Niche market collectable.
