Anyone *like* 1911 in 9mm?

So I mellowed out, started having a really good look at the gun, took it apart, put it back together a few times, then clued in and took out the recoil spring and started moving things around.

There is a decent amount of play in barrel to bushing and in bushing to slide.

Well, bugger... I feel pretty dumb now.

Since I doubt that counts as a factory defect I suppose I'm going to have to ask my smith what it's going to cost to have a new bushing fit to the thing.

Ganderite was right: blame the gun.

I had a np 29 that was kinda crappy group wise but ran well. Put a couple hundred rounds thru it using it as a loaner gun, now it's shooting much better groups (2" at 15 yards with remington UMC) and feels much smoother in cycling. trigger is still to heavy..but thats on my to do list.

Peronally love 1911's in 9...accurate, fast on the follow up and cheap to feed. whats not to like?

I will keep that in mind. I talked with Grumpy (wolverine) today at the gun show, showed him the slide, and he's going to send out a new bushing to try. Nice guy. Great support.

Mine can't do that well at 10m. It's not all the gun, but it's not all me either when I can have 6 of 7 45ACP touching if I'm on my game at that distance, and still maintain a respectable recognizable group further out.

So it's become an accurizing project. EGW has a decent price on mainspring housings too. I need a few arched ones...

So I took my slide out to the Brandon show and bumped into Grumpy Wolverine.

He sent me, at no cost, a couple different bushings to try. They fit snug to the barrel at lock up and require a wrench to get in and out of the slide.

Early tests show a marked improvement. Group sizes, if I do my part, are close to what I can get out of a .45. They just look worse for the smaller holes!

I think I'm on to something. I had a Wolfe service pack for 38super/9mm so I swapped in the recoil and sear springs. The sear spring has quite a lot less bend than the OEM one, with less tension. It has shaved a bit of weight from the trigger pull.

So, yes - next time instead of shouting angrily into the wind I will put a bit more thought into my troubleshooting.

And, of course, a big thanks to Wolverine. I need to get Grumpy a bottle of hooch, or some 38-40 brass :)

Best dealer in a country full of many good and excellent dealers.

When the Norinco 1911s came out in 9mm about 18 months ago, I bought 3. None of them would group with any ammo. The Norc 45s shot very well, right out of the box.

I bought 3 cheap barrels. 2 in 9mm and 1 in 7.62x25. All 3 now shoot very well. The 7.62 and one of the 9s are exceptionally accurate.

I watched the gunsmith fit the barrels. They came slightly long and he had to take a few licks off the hood to make the slide close all the way. The Norc barrels were not tight at all.

Blame the gun. I always do.....

Could we get more details on the 7.62x25mm?

I believe there is another thread in here, in recent weeks, about a fellow putting a x25 barrel in his SAM. They were all bumped in the last week or two when Wolverine gave us the gift of cheaper 1911's (happy times, other than devaluing mine - lol).

If I had any interest in picking up the x25 for reloading, that would be an interesting conversion. I've also been in the 460Rowland thread, asking myself whether I really really need a hand cannon to kill paper at 15 metres... But with an attitude like that, a BB gun would work as well, so it's a spurious thought for personal reflection.

...and I like weird cartridges.

I don't recall seeing anything for .357SIG options in 1911... not in abundance anyway. Anyone into that one? Or is it kind of redundant in amongst the likes of .40S&W and 38 super?

Gawd, no. Sacrilege. :p

I'm kinda the same way, except that I'm trying to find one pistol in 9mm that I actually look forward to shooting, rather than justifying a 9mm as a pistol to shoot in places where I might lose 45ACP casings ;)

I just really don't get excited by 9mm Luger. One glimmer may well be revolvers. I actually enjoy the 9mm cylinder in my new to me Blackhawk more than I do the .357 one. It has a pleasing characteristic. The 1911 just seems slow and sloppy rather than crisp and lively - I can feel the slide hit home at both ends of its stroke.. I won't buy a 1911 in .22 because my memories of that from childhood are the same - I much preferred the "feel" of how my Mark-II Ruger cycled.

I've got a used 9mm Commander coming, though. I know Hitzy here likes those. Perhaps that will be a bit of a nicer feel.

That gun show up for you yet? I recently purchased a 9mm 1911 style SAM commander length in SS and I just love it. Great trigger out of the box. Smooth & crisp. No take up, no over-travel, just a tad heavy but that can be easily remedied. Heavy (relatively speaking) gun for commander length but really nice balance because most of that weight is in the hand as opposed to out front. Don't shoot me, but IMO, it handles better than my Shadow, less barrel jump and faster back to target. Tried 4 different mag manufacturers and it is happy with them all. I read stories about 9mm 1911s being mag-sensitive but also that for commander length, it may not be quite as much of an issue. I really like the grip of both the Shadow and the 1911 platform, they both point and aim nice. Once the SAM has a FO front site, it will be interesting to see which one I gravitate to more.

It did - an STI Spartan IV. With the bull barrel it feels pretty chunky. The jury is still out on whether I prefer it to the SAM Omega or not. I'll have to get them both set up similarly for ergonomics before I figure that out. It's a good shooter, though.

It came with a single ACT, I think, mag. That one has different feed geometry than the Mecgars that I otherwise have - it holds the rounds more firmly and, unlike the MecGar, they don't have a tendency to pop a round or two if I set them down firmly. Both feed equally well, though. The only feeding problems I have are with the odd reload where the case mouth has a bit of a burr.

I did get a trigger pull scale, and have been having great fun in tweaking the sear and disconnect springs, per Brownells 2.5lb trigger article, and it has dropped pull weights substantially, even with my being conservative on my tweaking, for safety.

Now I wish they had adjustable sights! I don't fancy Novak type ones, and I'm not sure if it's possible or worth the expense to get them milled for BoMar type ones, or whether I should leave them as is and just look towards replacing both down the line with a single pistol set up from the get go the way that I want - Something like a 9mm Springfield Range Officer or one of those Seraphim Archangels.
